Dear Chico State Harrier Fans, Running in cold and foggy conditions on Saturday on the famed trails of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, CA, the men’s and women’s cross country teams from CSU Chico managed solid 1st and 2nd place performances. The men ran to a convincing 16 point effort while defeating NCAA ranked Cal Poly Pomona, and UCSD squads. The women’s team was upset in their bid to win their fourth straight title, as the 10th ranked Tritons of UCSD took advantage of a depleted Wildcat lineup, and some “off day” performances by a few other ‘Cats. All in all Saturday provided a nice starting point for the Chico state crew as they approach the championship season ahead. Women’s 6k. The women’s loss on Saturday wasn’t a complete surprise unfortunately as CSUC ran without ’03 All American and 17:16 track (5k) performer Missy Lendl, who had missed much of the week of running due to a severe bout with the flu. Defending CCAA champ Jen James had been involved in a nasty car accident that resulted in her truck being totaled less than two weeks before Saturday’s race, then picked up a case of the flu herself. Add recent illnesses to several others in the lineup, and add a very talented UCSD team to the equation…and it becomes very apparent that the ‘Cats were vulnerable on Saturday. A very solid performance would be needed by each of the ‘Cats scorers to have a chance on Saturday, and unfortunately this wasn’t quite the case. The first slip-up for the Wildcat squad was a horrible team start, combined with an aggressive overall start by many others. To put it simply, we were buried by the 800m mark. A team score at the mile mark would have seen the ‘Cats near 4th or 5th overall. A lot of work would need to be done in the coming 2.75 miles. Up front Katie Lee was moving up well with eventual champ Mimi Hodgins of UCSD. The pair gradually made their way up and through the three CSLA women who ran 1-2-3 through the mile. Jen James and Ciara Harvey ran in the middle of a chase pack that contained no less than 4 scorers from the UCSD squad. Unfortunately a 10 second gap had formed between this pack and the next smaller group in which Chico’s frosh Julie Shaw and a host of others were running. With 2 miles to go, the ‘Cats were in a really bad way, and needed some magic from Shaw and Lyndsey Nelson (running 4-5) who had spotted the UCSD 5th runner at least 100m with only 2 miles remaining. Both Shaw and Nelson would move up a few spots in the final 2 miles, but the large gap that separated them from the UCSD squad was never fully made up. Up front Chico’s Katie Lee who was a definite favorite for the individual crown, had lost touch with Hodgins by 2 miles, and slid 7 spots in the final 1.75 miles. A well-timed kick by both James and Harvey earned the pair 3rd and 4th place honors, but UCSD would take the next 3 spots. Lee was the next ‘Cat scorer, in 10th place, but passing her just before the line was UCSD’s Diane Dunn their final scorer. Lyndsey Nelson would take 18th place, with Shaw finishing 20th overall. By virtue of her top finish in the field of frosh, Julie would earn CCAA Frosh of the year honors for her effort. All in all, it was a tough day for the Lady-Cats who had suffered their first defeat at the CCAA’s since 2001. It is important to note, though that they were beaten, more than they gave the race away. UCSD has a talented group of women who the Chico coaches knew could give the ‘Cats a great race on a given day. Today, the Tritons came ready to do battle, and the ‘Cats weren’t up to the challenge. Thankfully the two teams will line up against on another in search of the regional title and an NCAA birth in two weeks in Pomona, CA. Stay tuned as this will be a great race! 2005 CCAA Cross Country Championships - 10/22/2005 Golden Gate Park's Lindley Meadows Women 6k Run CC Name----Year----School----Finals---Points Men’s 7950m Championship Race (Course wheeled as 50m short of standard distance) Today the women’s team had difficulty putting themselves into the positions early to help them to victory. This DEFINITELY wasn’t the case for the men’s squad, who had 9 of the top 10 spots claimed by the mile mark. The only Non-‘Cat running among the top 10 overall was ’02 CCAA champ Mark Batres a numerous time All American performer from Cal Poly Pomona. Batres, traditionally a slower starter ran behind the ‘Cats entire 7-8 through the mile, and had spotted the leaders too much real-estate already. Up front to no one’s surprise was Soph Scott Bauhs, who kept the pace quite honest (9:39 @ 2 miles) Although Chico would eventually sweep many of the top spots in this race, there were few actual packs within the top 10 overall. By two miles Senior Pat Boivin who’s a 3-Time XC All American and the only senior on the ‘Cats 20+ person roster started making a move to cover Bauh’s lead. Running just behind was the pair of Charlie Serrano and Beau Bettinger, each looking fairly strong. Kyle Ivie ran in 5th position overall but was still suffering the effects of a bout with a cold and was noticeably struggling. Starting to make his move from the pack behind was Pomona’s Batres who ran with a sense of urgency that comes with the reality of the possibility of having 15 points scored on you. CCAA runner of the week Josh Babiak, another tactically strong competitor from SF State had now moved up among the ‘Cats top 7 giving the Chico guys some added fuel for their final stretch. Running very impressively for the ‘Cats were Antonio Miramontes, Rory Kuykendall, Aaron Torres, and Danny DiMeo. Each had great races going and looked very strong going into the final 2 mile loop. Topping the list of impressive performances was Rory Kuykendall. Rory has continually upped his stock this season with solid performances while also increasing the intensities of his workouts. Today in the final 2 miles he would pull even with teammate Antonio Miramontes with 1 mile remaining as the pair now took aim at Pomona’s Batres who ran in 5th overall ahead. The 29:49 10k performer wouldn’t be caught today, but the pair would pull to within 4 seconds of the senior by the line, giving the ‘Cats 6 of the top 7 overall. Perhaps the most fitting conclusion to this day was the first XC title earned by the ‘Cats lone senior Pat Boivin. A humble runner who has made a name for himself in year’s past by doing his best running when it counts the most (at NCAA’s) Boivin gave a solid effort today and earned his first CCAA title, thus taking home the CCAA “runner of the year” award. Pat becomes the third Wildcat to claim this honor in the past 5 years (David Braund and Tyler Graff, being the other two). Scott Bauhs would claim second overall with Serrano and Bettinger not far behind in 3rd and 4th. Batres would claim the 5th spot with his 25:03 time, and Chico would close it’s scoring with the 6th place finish of Antonio Miramontes. Kuykendall would finish 7th just a tick behind Miramontes, and Ivie held on for 9th place overall. The race for 10th was an awesome battle between Chico’s Aaron Torres who was enjoying his best race as a ‘Cat, and UCSD’s top gun Carl Lostrom. Lostrom who holds track Pr’s of 3:50 (1500m), 14:35 (5k) and 9:09 (Steeple) was catching Torres in the final meters, but the Chico Jr. knowing the speedy Triton was coming switched gears as well. With 30m remaining, the two were at a dead sprint and side-by-side. Unfortunately Lostrom would win this duel, but not by much as both were clocked with the same time (to a tenth of a second!). Tim Tollefson of Chico who’s enjoyed an amazing breakthrough season landed his first All CCAA award finishing 13th overall. Finishing out the Wildcat placings was the always tough Danny DiMeo. The RS Frosh battled to the line with Stanislaus’ #2 guy, losing the sprint, but gaining more respect for his toughness on the course. DiMeo would finish 21st just one place from his hoped top 20 performance. A very solid effort for the men’s squad! West Region Info, including Start times, hotel info etc can be found at the following link: http://dsa.csupomona.edu/athletics/regionals/default.asp The men’s squad goes into the regional championship having won each of the past 3 versions of the event and a heavy favorite to defend their title from ’04. The women’s team now faces the unfamiliar role of ‘underdog’ as the UCSD women will enter the regional championship as the favorites for the title. As was said earlier, the Chico women have no intentions of relinquishing their regional title to any team, so this will be a great battle. Thank YOU!!! To everyone who made the trip down to Golden Gate Park in the cold and foggy weather to support the Wildcat Harriers. We appreciate your support. Also: Special Thank you goes out to alum Steve Brusig who put his photographic skills and new investment to great use with some awesome photos of the action, that I’m sharing with you all today. Thanks Steve!!! PS: The pic of Pat coming down the stretch w/ the smile as he’s about to win his first title is priceless!!! Happy running and Thanks for the Support! Sincerely, Gary Towne
