Wildcat B-teamers and red-shirt run well at Doc Adams Invitational

Tommy McGuan, a frosh from Canyon Country, enjoyed a nice PR (25:12) at the Doc Adams Invitational held at UC Davis
In an effort to give some much deserved love to our young and developing athletes that are either red shirting, or didn’t make the Deep CCAA squads last week, I want to share results of two recent performances with everyone. The two events below are UC Davis’ Doc Adams Invite, which was held on the same morning as the CCAA competition last week. Less than a week later (this past Friday evening) we held our annual post season 5k Time Trial on the track to give our younger athletes something more to take from the season. Since I wasn’t at the Doc Adams meet, Wildcat Assistant Matt Schubert did a wonderful job of re-capping the action.

DAVIS, CALIFORNIA - While 20 Wildcats traveled with Coaches Towne and Wickman to the CCAA championships in LA, the remainder of the squad (5 men, 7 women, and lots of red-shirts) headed to long-time rival UC Davis’s Doc Adams Invite. The course was a loop (3 times for the women/4 times for the men) around the scenic UC Davis Landfill and was very similar to the Santa Clara course the Wildcats competed on earlier this season. The runners here, a mixed bag of newbies and veterans acquitted themselves well and had excellent performances at this low-key meet.

Men's 8K: A start time of 10AM allowed the men knowledge of the success of their teammates in LA (isn’t modern technology wonderful?), and this fired them up to do well (a little ribbing-all in good fun-was had at Alan Campos’s expense for not completing the perfect Chico sweep, but many of us were absolutely thrilled for Alan, as he is an excellent team leader and one of the hardest workers in the program). The course was hard-packed dirt, and although narrow in some sections, relatively wide and very flat. The weather was extremely favorable, in the mid-to-low 60s, so fast times were expected. From the start, Stanford’s B-squad threw down the hammer. Yours truly wasn’t exactly at the mile mark (close enough), but based on feedback from athletes, a foursome of Stanford runners hit the mile in mid-4:40s, with Robbie Reid (red-shirt from Santa Clara), Matt Miller (red-shirt from Cal), Johnny Sanchez (red-shirting Chico frosh), and Dylan Anthony (red-shirting Chico frosh) in the mix. Donald Truesdell (JR) led the Chico State men through the mile in 4:52, with Julio Jimenez (SR), Zachary Zadrozna (FR), and Brendan Scanlon (SR) within 5-6 seconds. Sprinkled among and slightly behind the Chico athletes were the numerous red-shirt freshmen from Chico’s huge class, many running their last 8k of the season.

The next time the athletes were seen (~3 miles), Reid had broken away and built up a comfortable lead. Sanchez was still in a pack of 4-5 runners all battling for 2nd place. Dylan had fallen off some, but was still looking good. Zach Zadrozna had moved up and had taken the number one Chico spot, with Donald Truesdell and Brendan Scanlon (who had been running for just 3 weeks after missing most of the season with a back injury) not far back. Freshmen Dan Parker, Tommy McGuan, Will Melton (also running his first race of the year after starting the season late due to a stress fracture last spring and an infection from appendicitis in August), Geoff Hull (also running his first race, after breaking his ankle at camp and missing ~1 month of training before returning to running), Jeremy Brummitt, Kevin Svahn, Dillon Breen, and Alex McGuirk were sprinkled in and among the Chico athletes. Rogan Meza (FR), Chico’s 5th, was right with his red-shirt teammates as the men set out for their last loops.

Reid would hold on for the win in an impressive 24:10, but finishing 3rd was red-shirt Johnny Sanchez. The Roosevelt High (Fresno) product had an excellent race, recording a super-fine 8k PR of 24:33. Only 15 seconds back, fellow red-shirt Dylan Anthony (Kodiak, AK) finished a superb run of his own, stopping the clock with a time of 24:48 in 9th place, another solid PR. Leading Chico State home in 13th place was freshman Zach Zadrozna, who also enjoyed a solid 8k PR of 25:09. Also riding the PR train were Tommy McGuan (16th 25:12), Will Melton (19th, 25:17 in his 1st 8k ever!), and Donald Truesdell (20th, 25:19). Finishing just behind Donald was Brendan Scanlon, who finished 22nd and clocked a solid 25:25-not bad for 3 weeks of running (yours truly mixed his and Julio’s bibs up, hence the screw-up in the results)! Dan Parker finished 24th, capping a fine run and PR of his own (25:27). Julio Jimenez was Chico’s 4th finisher, claiming 28th place in a time of 25:37 in his last XC race in a Wildcat jersey. Red-shirts Dillon Breen and Alex McGuirk were next across the line in 36th and 37th-just off their 8k PRs, but recording solid 25:50 and 25:53 outings, respectively. Jeremy Brummitt (40th, 26:05), Geoff Hull (46th 26:16-1st 8k), Kevin Svahn (47th, 26:18) were next across the line. Rounding out the scoring for Chico State was Rogan Meza, in 56th. Rogan was a bit off his 26:40 PR, but completed the race as a solid #5 for Chico nonetheless. Unfortunately, UC Davis did not post team scores after the top-3 teams. With the unattached athletes, Chico State would have scored 139 points, so after removing the unattached runners, the men likely would have finished a respectable 4th or 5th as a team. Of note is how the red-shirts would have done had they been a team: they would have been 4th, with 71 points, just 9 back from the UC Davis “B” team.
Women's 6K: The ladies also knew a bit of how their teammates did before they raced. Yours truly kept the specifics of how their compatriots placed, but did tell the ladies that they had won, Kara Lubieniecki had won the individual title, and that they had scored a meager 19 points. The women were quite fired up by this, and having been instructed by myself and Coach Whitcomb on the line-and Coach Towne earlier in the week-to race in the same aggressive manner they did at Santa Clara when they won the B race, the women took off.

Again, Stanford took things out pretty hard, with USF opening the gauntlet as well. The Chico ladies came through the mile in ones and twos, but looked very composed and ready to do some serious racing. Sara Mikesell and Hayley Swanson led the Chico State charge, running within stride length of each other most of the race. Brooke Bergesen was a few steps back, and she was followed in short order by Natalie Galvan, Anna Eicholtz, and Sam Racine. Red-shirt Jessica Varela found herself between Mikesell-Swanson and Bergesen as she ran her first 6k.
Sara Mikesell (207), Hayley Swanson (189), Jessie Varela (86), and Brooke Bergesen (184) all enjoyed big Pr’s in both events this week!
The women performed very well and finished 2nd behind a USF team that stomped the field with 18 points. First across the line for Chico State was freshman Hayley Swanson in 10th place (22:24), followed quickly by Sara Mikesell in 12th (22:25). A mix-up in the chute put Brooke ahead of Sara in the official results when the opposite was case, nevertheless Bergesen finished only a few seconds behind her teammate with a time of 22:28, finishing in 13th. Finishing in 15th in an excellent 6k debut was freshman track convert Natalie Galvan (22:30). Rounding out the scoring in 22nd for Chico State was another track runner, Anna Eicholtz (22:50). Freshman Jessica Varela was just behind in 23rd place (22:52), with Sam Racine finishing 31st (23:27). Jessica Nelson (33rd 23:33) and Brittany Balcom (43rd 24:57) rounded out the Chico 7, with red-shirt Emily Stickney finished between them (40th 24:35). Given that we had 4 women at or faster than 6-minute pace for 6k (22:30), the coaches were pleased with the women’s performances.

Below are the 5k Time Trial Results, excluding top runners who had just competed at CCAA’s.

Women’s 5k

1. Sara Mikesell (RS FR) 17:56 (1 minute PR!!) 2. Natalie Galvan (RS FR) 18:16 (First Track 5k Ever!) 3. Hayley Swanson (RS FR) 18:22 (PR) 4. Brooke Bergesen (JR) 18:25 (PR) 5. Jessie Varela (FR) 18:26 (PR) 6. Emily Stickney (FR) 19:26 (first 5k on track ever) 7. Brittany Balcom (RS FR) 20:10 (First 5k on track)

Huge run by Mikesell who has broken out in a BIG way this fall. Intermediate splits landed her at 11:40 for 3200m (PR) then she dropped a 5:35ish final mile to the eventual 55+ second PR! Sara becomes the 11th athlete on the current women’s roster to have broken the 18 minute mark for the 5k on the track.

Men’s 5k

1. Zack Zadrozna (RS FR) 14:54 2. Johnny Sanchez (FR) 14:58 3. Dylan Anthony (FR) 14:59 4. Dan Parker (FR) 15:11 5. Kevin Svahn (FR) 15:13 6. Alex McGuirk (FR) 15:16 7. Alfonso Cisneros (RS FR) 15:18 8. Jeremy Brummitt (FR) 15:19 9. Will Melton (FR) 15:24 10. Rogan Meza (RS FR) 15:27 11. Tommy McGuan (FR) 15:29 12. Dillon Breen (FR) 15:37 13. Donald Truesdell (SO) 15:44 14. Steven Bradley (RS FR) 16:13 (800m track runner stepping up) 15. Geoff Hull (Fr) 16:26 (first time on track since breaking foot at camp in late August)

A Very good performance by this youthful group! Zadrozna’s 15:20 PR recorded during the ‘10 track season, was crushed on this evening. Perhaps the biggest surprise was with how the Gutsy second year student managed his race. Running at the tail end of a 4 person lead pack going through 3200m (9:36) Zadrozna flew around the group and recorded a 66!!! 9th lap. Of course the reality of such a bold move would sink in as the laps progressed but the Rocklin HS product held on tight and ‘damage control’ held his first sub 15 in place. Zadrozna, Sanchez and Anthony became the 10th, 11th, and 12th ‘Cats (on the current roster) to have broken the 15 minute mark for the 12.5 lap distance.
