Top Wildcat Brent Handa finishing off an outstanding 23:56 8K run!
Palo Alto, CA -- I'm pleased to report that the Wildcat Cross Country teams enjoyed another fine outing on the farm last Saturday morning. The men's squad established themselves as the #4 team in California with their 6th place overall finish behind three Pac 10 schools (Stanford, UCLA and CAL) and two distance powers Arkansas and Northern Arizona. And all of this was done with only 1 returning Chico runner from the 10 that represented our school a year ago at the same meet! The women's team notched another Top-10 finish despite not having an especially good day. We'll start with the men's race since they were the first to hear the starters gun on Saturday.

Men's 8K: As mentioned previously, the 'Cats would send only 1 athlete to the line that had run in the Stanford meet a year ago (Alan Campos). Despite having a relatively youthful group and a few early setbacks (Dayne Gradone had his racing flat taken off in the first quarter of the race/ Donald Truesdell tripped and fell at the 200m mark) the 'Cats found a way to put six across the line before 25 minutes and nine seconds had elapsed from the clock.

Leading the 'Cats from the gun was senior Brent Handa a graduate of tiny Fall River High School in the mountains of Northeast California. Handa put himself
among the Top-30-40 from the gun and ran a strong even effort throughout, while moving through the deep and talented field. As the race wore on, Brent found himself in VERY select company. A solid kick put 4 seconds on UC Davis' 5k school record holder Jonathan Peterson (14:03/3:45 credentials) and stopped the clock at a very swift 23:56 time.

Running a fine race of his own was RS Frosh Isaac Chavez (debuting for the 'Cats) who notched a Top-30 finish and sub 24:30 mark to begin his Chico State career. Adrian Sherrod, Alan Campos and Anthony Costales would round out the 'Cats scoring with 47th, 54th and 61st place finishes. RS frosh Alfonso Cisneros didn't score for the 'Cats but he did enjoy his best race ever while wearing the Wildcat jersey for the first time. His 25:08 mark is amazing progress for a young man who was the final runner to make the 'Cats roster a year ago (coming from McFarland HS). JC transfer Joseph Rivera struggled a bit but still ran a commendable 25:25 time while finishing 87th overall. Dayne Gradone, who was mentioned earlier, ran with just one shoe the entire race and still managed to finish in 25:35, although not before wearing a thick piece of skin completely off the underside of his foot. Donald Truesdell never fully recovered after the early fall and placed 125th overall, while teammate Manny Mejia also had an off day while finishing 145th overall respectively.

As the team scores were read and the sixth place finish was announced, the Wildcat fans could take pride in the number of solid Division I teams that the Chico boys had put behind them. Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis, UCSB, Long Beach State, USF, and a number of others all finished in arrears of this relatively unproven group of harriers. Their performance was also impressive in that most other teams who toed the line on Saturday were in their 2nd or 3rd race of the season. On this same token, we still have 10 weeks until the NCAA Championships, so there's much work to be done and a long way to go. Please find results below:

Women's 6K: The Chico State women's team stepped into the 2010 Stanford meet knowing that a lot of very good teams would be present and that it would be as tough of a test as we'll see this season until the NCAA Championships. The Chico women have shown great depth of talent, but our fitness as a whole has some distance to go, and this showed on Saturday. Our 1-7 gap was well under a minute, but we lacked low #'s up front like many of the teams who managed to place ahead of us.

Leading the Wildcat pack on Saturday was Senior Kara Lubieniecki a 16:45 5k performer on the track and a two time All American. Kara and teammate Alia Gray spent much of the race operating side by side as they so often do. The pair got out fairly aggressively and did their best to work through the field as they were able. Gray spent much of the early summer recovering from a tough season ending injury that she sustained in March of the past tack season. Also running with Kara and Alia for much of the race was Shannon McVannel who was returning to action after red shirting the entire '09-'10 school year. The Junior from Salinas, looked solid for about 4-5k before she began to slide back through the field.
Running in a Wildcat uniform for the first time since transferring from U of Penn, Michelle S. Johnson got out well, running several meters behind Kara, Alia and McVannel through 3-4k. Although she fell off their pace over the final kilometers, Michelle showed a glimpse of the potential that she has to help this team on the national level. Shannon Rich a 17:38 track performer ran strong throughout working closely with Johnson. Not a lot of movement happened either way over the final kilometer except for Shannon McVannel who unexplainably lost 10 seconds and nearly 10 places on teammates Johnson and Rich in the final 200m.

At the finish Kara hit the tape as the first 'Cat in 38th overall , Alia Gray followed just 10 seconds behind, and Michelle S. Johnson followed some 20 seconds back. Shannon Rich stopped the clock at 22:26, and McVannel managed to reach the line and stop the scoring at 68th overall. Amy Schnittger followed McVannel by 9 seconds, and Senior Colleen Joyce followed 3 seconds later. Jonah Weeks and Paige Henker suffered through rough outings after sustaining side stitches that wouldn't let go. Weeks was out very well in the early stages, looking strong, and Henker was a scorer for our team a year ago.. so it'll be great to have them at full strength again in the coming weeks.

Alia, Kara and Shannon McVannel early in the run.

Also of note was the run of Tori Tyler who has one final track season of eligibility remaining for the 'Cats. She ran unnatached on Saturday, having exhausted her XC years.. but managed a fine 25th place effort, despite having to miss much of the previous week's training due to a foot problem.

Up Next: This Thursday the 'Cats will hit the road again, heading North this time to the state of Oregon. On Saturday the 'Cats will take on some of the best that the Northwest has to offer at the Jim Bowles Willamette Invitational. The Willamette meet is traditionally one of the best on the west coast, and the 'Cats have enjoyed amazing success through the years. This year the fields will be stronger than ever with DI power Portland in attendance, as well as DII regional foe U of Alaska at Anchorage.
Isaac Chavez closing out a great debut for the 'Cats

L-R Michelle S. Johnson, Shannon McVannel and Shannon Rich with 250m to go.
