Salem, Oregon -- As so many Wildcat teams from the past have done, the 2011 Chico State harriers brought home the team titles from this weekend’s Willamette Invitational in Salem, OR. The men’s race was an absolute Barn Burner (between Chico and Portland) that came down to the sixth runners, to determine who would take home the team championship awards. On the women’s side, a resilient Wildcat group fended off a mid race challenge from Santa Clara University before cruising home with a 29 point margin of victory. Overall it was another memorable trip for the ‘Cats that included some time in Eugene and even a taste of the classic Oregon wet weather.

Men’s Cardinal 8K: Going into the race and having looked at the list of entrants the ‘Cats knew that the Portland Pilots (11th ranked in DI) would provide a solid test for the team title. In the pre-race talk your truly described a scenario where it would most likely be a lot of Purple and Maroon near the front, and we’d need to have a solid outing to defeat the Portland Pilot crew. In Portland’s defense they rested their Top-5 from the previous week’s Griak Invite, but did run 23:30 guy Joash Osoro who ran as their #2-3 in most races last year. The ‘Cats rested Adrian Sherrod (top finisher at last week’s Stanford Invite) and Josh Linen (#6 at Stanford) who both had planned weeks off racing.

As the race developed, things certainly looked exactly as we’d talked of the evening before in our pre-race meeting. Purple and Maroon uniforms were scattered throughout the top 25, and the team score looked extremely tight throughout. Teammates Isaac Chavez, Anthony Costales, and Johnny Sanchez ran among the top pack which stayed together for the initial 3 miles (covered in a conservative 14:50). Just a few strides back were ‘Cats Joey Kochlacs and Dayne Gradone who looked great, but battled with Portland runners the entire run.

If the race were scored at 3 miles the Pilots would have taken home the crown, with three running among the top-4, but the ‘Cats were well positioned and a shift of only a few seconds could swing the balance of the race. Over the final kilometers the momentum would shift as the ‘Cats five who ran among the top 12 throughout managed to shake Portland’s #5. Meanwhile the ‘Cats 6-7 runners Joseph Rivera and Alfonso Cisneros stormed through the final 2 miles after a conservative start. Rivera and Cisneros’ pass of Portland’s Connor Whan (Portland’s eventual #5) proved to be invaluable, tacking a much needed two points to the Pilots score.

As the leaders hit the track for the 150m tartan finishing stretch, tension was high, as each point was valuable in the chase for the team title. After Northwest Nazarene’s Barak Watson hit the tape first overall the Portland/Chico dual began. Portland’s Matt Frerker had a 2 stride advantage over Chavez with 100m remaining, but Isaac closed extremely hard over the final straight. Hitting the finish and out-leaning his Portland opponent wasn’t enough on this day as the Chip timing system later determined that Frerker’s foot (which held the valuable computer chip) crossed just .02 seconds before Isaac’s…. Back to the race. Chico’s latest Freshman sensation Johnny Sanchez finished a beautifully crafted race with a nice sprint to hold off Portland’s 2,3,4 guys. Sanchez’ margin of victory in this sprint was no more than .21 seconds!!! This race was TIGHT! Teammate Anthony Costales looked as though he’d won the battle for 7th with Portlands’s Cody Wells, but just as Chavez had faced earlier.. the chip had Wells crossing just .02 ahead. The Pilots had won two sprint finishes against us by a combined .04 seconds in a race that would eventually result in a TIE! Portland now had 4 across in the top-7 and the ‘Cats had 3 across in the top-8. Joey Kochlacs and Dayne Gradone scooped up places 10 and 12 with the scrappy Soph from Watsonville (Gradone) stopping the ‘Cats scoring at 24:37. Twenty seconds elapsed on the clock before Portland’s #5 Connor Whan would hit the tape.. and in that time ‘Cats #6-7 runners-Rivera and Cisneros had crossed the line. Unfortunately for the ‘Cats, not enough numbers from other teams had taken up those 20 seconds between each team’s #5, which gave the Pilots some hope in the tight battle for the team title.

The result of all of these numbers, close finishes and flurry of activity… a final score of 37-37! NCAA rules state that ties are not broken which is too bad in my book because I’ve always liked the idea of going to a team’s #6 for such cases. Either way, the Willamette Staff had one team champion award and that WAS given to the ‘Cats based on the merit of the #6 runner (Joseph Rivera) finishing hitting the line first.

It was a great team race and one that won’t quickly be forgotten. As you gaze over the results, you’ll see what could almost have been described as a Chico-Portland duel among the top finishers within the field. Chico/Portland runners accounted for 19 of the top 25 finishers on the day. Fittingly the ‘Cats and Portland have a number of things in common, but one of those things is the relationship of the Pilots #1 runner Trevor Dunbar and ‘Cats Miles Dunbar. Trevor was rested this weekend after a big race last week in Minnesota, but was on the course Saturday cheering for his teammates and of course his brother Miles. Miles’ performance was nothing short of spectacular. After coming into the season in amazing shape the fifth year senior came down injured during our first week of official practice. Three and a half weeks went by with no running and a lot of hard cross training. Finally the tendonitis problem released and Miles resumed running again 2.5 weeks ago. With a very short window of running and just a few workouts behind him, Miles managed to crack the 25 minute barrier for the first time in his career and his brother of course was there to cheer him on and congratulate him after. A very cool story within the race.

Women’s Cardinal 5K: The women’s race appeared would be a bit more relaxed than the men’s going in. The regionally ranked (DI) Portland women were running their “A” squad in Eugene on Saturday, so their remaining women (#8-?) would be competing in Salem. The remaining field was relatively modest, with several ranked DIII teams (Lewis and Clark/Willamette) and a few DI’s (most notably Santa Clara University).

Passing through the mile mark the ‘Cats looked to be in full control of both the front of the race and the team battle. Teammates Alia Gray, Amy Schnittger and Katie Spencer led the field 1-2-3 overall as they passed through the mile in 5:40. Teammates Jonah Weeks and Stephanie Consiglio followed fairly close, each running within the top 15 overall as well.

After doing the upper loop that equates to an additional full mile of running, Gray and Schnittger appeared from the trees still running together at the front of the field although Spencer had drifted back to somewhere around 8th position. Meanwhile Weeks and Consiglio had been passed by a large pack of Santa Clara women that appeared to be 4-5 strong. It looked like we might have a much closer race than we’d thought coming in.

Fortunately, the final mile of the race saw Shannon Rich and Brooke Bergesen catch up with Consiglio and Weeks, so the LadyCats had 4 operating between 15th-25th place overall, with three battling for Top-10 honors. Closing well Gray and Schnittger looked great in finishing 1-2 overall holding off Lewis and Clark’s Illana Livstrong. Their low 17:50s times line up very well with past Wildcats who have swept top spots in the same meet (Katie Lee/Missy Lendl/Jen James/Mary Torres..etc..) Katie Spencer rebounded well over the final ½ mile and kicked home to a fifth place finish overall. Shannon Rich's late race surge would put her in 14th respectively while Bergesen, Consiglio and Weeks would take 21st, 22nd and 25th places. Backing this group up was a huge group of 8 ‘Cats that crossed the line in a 12 second span between 18:41-18:53. RS Frosh Jessie Varela led the charge with her 37th place finish.

Upon examining the results the ‘Cats came home with a convincing 29 point victory over Santa Clara. It was nice to gain another team title in Salem, but the women understood that our team was, and is capable of quite a bit more. Hopefully the coming weeks will offer better fitness and a tighter pack toward the front, as we’ll surely need these things as we approach the championship segment to come.

In the “Future Looks Bright Dept.” we had some very solid performances turned in by red shirting athletes on Saturday as well. Willamette has a “Gold” race for men and women that pits, NAIA, JC, and Unnat/Club runners against one another on the same layout as the “Cardinal” races that the ‘Cats competed in.

In the men’s 8k race a few of the highlights:
Phil Graber (jr transfer from Butte College) 25:35
Falco DiGiallonardo (true frosh) 25:42
Geoff Bogan (true frosh) 25:57
Chance Varnado-Richardson 26:04

Quetta Pienado 18:27

Xiang Tak 18:39
Jackie Mansoor 18:53
Jordan Walsh 19:15
RaeAnn Vazquez 20:15
Olivia Watt 22:16

The RS Frosh Gals tore it up on Saturday! Their team average would have been in the 18:40 range, which would have put them ahead of several ranked NAIA teams and in the Top-5 teams overall (if they could have been scored). If this sounds familiar then it should, because our standout group of frosh guys had a Very similar day a year ago at this meet as well. We’re setting up for the coming years nicely with this group, and we ran without top true frosh Rebekah Bahra (at the Humboldt Invite) who was unable to compete this week.

Thanks the support and keep an eye out for the ‘Cats in two weeks at the Santa Clara Invite, where we’ll rest the majority of our Top 10, but run the rest of the roster (still a very competitive team of course). Then it’s off to CCAA’s in Santa Rosa which is on Saturday October 22.
