Summary - Noah Marcus -
The NCAA DII Western Regional Cross Country Championships were held yesterday
at Woodward Park in Fresno, CA. Top notch teams from California, Oregon,
Washington, Montana, and Hawaii were on hand to compete for the regional
title and for qualifying spots to the NCAA national championships.
UC Davis' men won last year's regional and placed 5th at the NCAA championships.
North state rival, California State University, Chico was the runner up
team last year, and placed 9th at the NCAAs. University of Alaska, Anchorage
and UC San Diego also returned strong squads from the NCAA championships
last year, having placed 16th and 15th respectively. Both Chico and Davis
have fared well this season and were nationally ranked (Chico 5th and
Davis 8th) in the NCAA Division II going into this weekend's meet.
The north state rivalry was played out in all it's glory under absolutely
beautiful blue skies (after two days of rain!) Saturday morning at Woodward
Park. The men's team from Chico State seized it's first regional title
since 1969 from perennial powerhouse UC Davis. The wildcats ran aggressively
and positioned themselves well early on, setting the tone for the rest
of the race. At the finish the Chico squad landed their five scoring athletes
in the top 14, decisively winning the competition, and defeating the defending
champion Aggies. Chico State was the only team to have five men honored
on the All West Region team. UC Davis finished a distant second, and University
of Alaska Anchorage finished third to edge out the UC San Diego men for
the final national qualifying spot.
The women's race was built up similarly with the defending champion Aggies
coming off of a stinging loss to the Wildcats two weeks ago at the CCAA
championships, and the upstart Chico squad looking for a first ever regional
title. Also in the mix were strong squads from UC San Diego and Humboldt
State. The Chico women came into the meet ranked 7th nationally, with
the Ags ranked 10th, and the 'Jacks ranked 19th.
The women's race followed shortly after the men's, and yielded a real
nail biter. Early in the race the wildcats solid pack running appeared
to give them the advantage, however as the race progressed the Aggie women
moved up well to challenge. With a half mile to go in the 6k it was still
anyone's race, and coming into the final stretch it appeared that the
wildcat's were in position for their first ever championship at the regional
meet. The looks on the faces of these women was inspiring as members of
both teams dug deep, hoping to pull out the win in this heated duel. Elbows
and knees were flying everywhere as the ladies kicked down hard, battling
for every last point, on the run to the finish. After the smoke had cleared,
the Aggie women came away with the title, winning by a scant 5 point margin
over the Wildcats. UC San Diego finished 3rd to upset Humboldt State for
the final qualifying spot to nationals.
The NCAA DII National Cross Country Championships will be held on November
23 in Ashland, OH.
