Wildcats sweep CCAA track titles

LOS ANGELES - The Chico State men's and women's track and field teams made history Saturday in Los Angeles by sweeping the California Collegiate Athletic Association championships for the first time. The men's squad won the title in 2003. It is the first CCAA track and field title for the Wildcat women.

Vincent Boatwright finished first in the decathlon (6,260 points) and teammate Chris Greene finished just behind him (6,231 points) in the 10-event, two day competition.
Lead by Tyler Graff's (14:47.02) and Charlie Serrano's (14:50.14) 1-2 finish, the men's distance squad had six runners pick up 30 of the possible 39 points in the 5,000 meters.
Chris Eggers (3:55.59) and Kyle Ivie (3:57.64) finsihed 1-2 in the 1,500 meters and Peter Paplanus (1:50.94) and Beau Bettinger (1:52.90) did the same thing in the 800 meters.
Peter Francis placed second in the triple jump (48-04.75) and Michael Davies took third (46-09).
Patrick Boivin finished first in the 3,000 steeple chase (9:23.57) and Brendan Page took first in the shot put (56-10.25).
Justin May finished second in the high jump (6-8) and third in the long jump (22-8.5). Bryan Thunborg took second in the discus (159-9) and Vern Ruiz took third in the 10,000 (31:35.08).
For the women, Katie Lee led a 1-2 finish in the 5,000 with a time of 17:19.75. Missy Lendl took second (17:26.06).
Margaret Pridgen won the 1,500 (4:38.78).
The Wildcats made it a 1-2-3 sweep the 3,000 steeplechase, with Jennifer James (11:10.18) winning, followed by Kristi Cangiamilla (11:26.50) and Sarah Montez (11:35.95).
Dallase Scott took second in the 800 (2:14) to lead a group of four Chico State athletes that picked up 18 points in the event.
Becky Rankin took second in the high jump (5-4.25), Brianne Ferris was third in the shot put (44-6.25) and Ryana Smith took third in the 400 (57.90).

Wildcats in first place after day one of CCAA Championships
LOS ANGELES - Both the Chico State men's and women's track and field teams are in first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships at Jesse Owens track on the campus of Cal State L.A. after the first day of competition.
The women have accumulated 71 points through six events and lead second-place Cal State L.A. by 23 points. The Wildcat men amassed 73.5 points in five events and hold a 36.5 point advantage over runner-up Cal Poly Pomona. The CCAA Championships conclude on Saturday
The men staked their claim in the javelin, sweeping the top four spots. Troy Lalaguna finished first (193 feet, 4 inches), followed by Doug Hewlett (178-8), Robert Mace (176-6) and Jacob Sanderson (171-9). The four throwers are responsible for 29 of the men's points.
The distance squad picked up 15 points in the 10,000 meters with Vern Ruiz (31:35.08), Antonio Miramontes (31:46.98), and Joel Martinez (32:35.55) finishing 3-5, respectively.
Chico State's Chris Greene leads the decathlon (3,307 points) and teammate Vincent Boatwright is just behind him in second (3,228 points).
Bryan Thunborg finished second in the discus (159-09), Aaron Wise was third in the pole vault (14-9 1/2), and Justin May was third in the long jump (22-6.5).
On the women's side, Katie Lee successfully defended her 2003 CCAA title in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:54.02, convincing beating Cal State L.A.'s Sarah Bouchard by eight seconds. Missy Lendl finished fourth (10:04.25), Jennifer James was sixth (10:20.26), and Sarah Montez was eighth (10:33.70) for a total of 19 points in the event.
Alicia Wiley added points for the Wildcats with a second place finish in the 10,000 (38:34.64). Monique Silva was fourth (38:48.49), Paige Osborn seventh (39:42.85), and Laura Cohen eighth (39:55.14).
Rachelle Sabo was second in the pole vault (12-1 1/2) with the second-highest mark in school history. The vault qualifies her for NCAA Division II championships. The Wildcats had five women score a total of 20 points in the pole vault Sara Weiss (4th), Chelsea McGinnis (5th), Jocelyn Likens (7th), and Melissa Moore (8th).

'Cats to compete in CCAA Track & Field Championships
On Wednesday the Chico State track and field teams begin their trek to Los Angeles to participate in this weekend's CCAA Track and Field Championships. This year's championship event is hosted by Cal State Los Angeles and promises to be another stellar meet.
Action will begin on Friday, and continues through Saturday with the final events being run in the early evening hours on Saturday. Click on the CCAA logo above for information on the meet, including the schedule of events, a link to real time results, heat sheets, and NCAA and CCAA event rankings.
Both Chico State teams finished second to UC Davis at last year's Championships. The men's team won Chico State's first, and only, CCAA track and field title in 2002.
