Womens’s 3,000m:
Fifth year senior Mary Torres stepped to the line in the women’s 3,000m with only the fifth fastest PR in the field, and having not enjoyed a solid outing at any distance since the beginning of the season. From the outside, things didn’t look too promising for the transfer from Ventura College. Thankfully though, recent practice sessions had indicated definite potential for running fast, and Mary had a season of frustration yet to unleash on the fields in Friday’s 3k and Saturday’s 5k. The women’s 3k was the most loaded field of any of the women’s events contested this weekend. No less than 7 women who were competing will end their season at this year’s NCAA meet. Headlining this All Star group were UCSD’s Dianne Dunn a 4:31-1500m performer and XC standout, and Karla Alburez of CSLA who ranks among the NCAA’s top 5 in three different distance events.
Add the likes of Maija Rohde a 35 minute 10k performer who ranks #3 nationally in the 25 lap event, and you start to understand what Mary was up against on Friday.
The early pace was a bit bumpy as different athletes took turns at the front, each trying to make things more difficult for the rest. Torres hung strong and withstood the surging pace while hitting the 1600m mark in 5:13. Looking fairly well given the swift and uneven early pace, Torres covered the moves that needed to be covered until there were just she and Dunn still hitting 80 second laps. Closing with a 78 second final lap, Torrres put the clamps down on the tiring Dunn, and would hit the tape with a huge 13 second Pr for the 7.5 lap distance. Her 9:52 finish time vaults her to #3 All Time in CSUC history behind Katie Lee and Jenny Spoon, two VERY accomplished Wildcats and also moves her up to #3 on the NCAA list.
Junior teammate Sarah Montez also enjoyed a substantial PR in this event hitting the tape 4th overall (10:05) while covering the final 200m in a blistering 34 seconds! Montez would employ these same closing wheels in Saturday’s 1500m final, so stay tuned for this race summary! Sarah’s time moves her up to #9 on the All Time CSUC 3k list and also gives her an excellent chance at contesting this event at the NCAA meet. Frosh Colleen Joyce who’s battled a calf issue for the past month, battled hard but fell quite a bit short of her 10:55 pr recorded earlier in the season.

Men’s 10,000m:
Or the only men's distance race NOT won by a Wildcat. The ‘Cats would send 4 to the line tonight in the 25 lap event hoping to place each among the Top-8 overall while kicking off the team scoring in a big way. Senior Antonio Miramontes REALLY wanted badly to win the event, but this would be quite difficult given the presence of Mark Batres, Pomona’s several-time All American and sub 30minute 10k runner. The plan was to allow Antonio to run an aggressive race from the front, while his younger teammates Jeff Wilson (So), Jordan Page (Fr), and Eddie Serna (Fr) keyed off the pack in hopes of scoring as many points as possible. After a few conservative laps to start, Miramontes assumed the lead and quickly developed a nice gap between himself and the chase pack. By the 5k Miramontes had developed a 50 meter lead as he hit 5k in roughly 15:15. Batres, respecting Miramontes strength now started to move forward, breaking from the field and giving chase to his Wildcat counterpart. By four miles, Miramontes had been caught and 73 second laps were starting to become 74’s and 75’s. Not a good sign for the gritty runner who prepped for Golden Valley HS in Merced, CA. As Miramontes slowed, Batres maintained the pace, and soon was off on his own to repeat as the CCAA 10k individual champ. Sophomore Jeff Wilson who had been picking up steam for some time during the race hit the 8k mark at 25:00 looking Very strong and appearing poised to perhaps take the 2nd place spot. Stanislaus’ Bobby Olivera wouldn’t allow this though as Olivera put the hammer down on a now tiring Wilson over the final 2-3 laps, but Jeff hung on strong for his second straight All CCAA 10k honor. Also running quite nicely was RS Frosh Jordan Page who was locked in an intense battle with Pomona’s Isaac Perez . The two ran nearly 8 laps, as each traded surges, trying to break the other. Perez finally accomplished his goal, and in the process passed Miramontes as well. Antonio would hit the tape 5th, with Page just behind in 6th. Eddie Serna held on tight over the final kilo to claim the final scoring spot, giving the ‘Cats half of the scoring finishers in the race.

Lindsay Nelson and Julie Shaw running 1-2 in the women’s 10k
|
|
Women’s 10,000m:
Tonight’s 10k field for the women was definitely a strong one. Chico’s Lindsay Nelson had the fastest seed time coming in, having run 36:40 at the Stanford Invit earlier in the season. Several other athletes entered had already hit the NCAA provisional mark for the distance. Also, add former JC State 10k champ Adrienne Schumm of CP Pomona, and 18:00 5k teammate Christina Jimenez and you have quite a field. Joining Nelson on the line were Frosh Willdcats Julie Shaw and Allison Ivie, both running their maiden voyage over the 25 lap distance. Each had shown promise w/ training and 5k running that indicated hopeful success this evening.
The plan for the ‘Cats would be for Lindsay Nelson to lock into 37:00 pace for at least the first 5k while guiding teammate Shaw evenly through the half way point. Knowing that the majority of the field would follow this duo Ivie would run a more reasonable pace in the early-going in hopes of picking off some of the overzealous ones who might fall off the pack.
The plan worked just as hoped for the initial 5k as Nelson who seems to have a computer locked into her brain that allows her to hit splits that are within a tenth of a second of the previous one, led Shaw, and the majority of the field through 5k in 18:28. As expected most of the field chased the early pace, and Humboldt’s Lee, Pomona’s Schumm, and Stanislas’ Frier became victims of the pace by the third mile. During the fourth mile Shaw started to crack, and now the pack was whittled down to four.
Nelson kept the pace honest and even and the three behind her were showing the fatigue, but weren’t about to let the Chico runner leave them behind. Finally with about 4 laps to go, UCSD’s Burkhardt began to crack and slipped from the pace. Now it was just Nelson, CSLA’s Cespedes, and Pomona’s Jimenez remaining. Inside of 800m to go Jimenez began to peel from the pace, and now it was a duel between Nelson and Cespedes. As the crowd could sense a close finish Nelson found another gear and started to separate from the tough CSLA runner over the final 300m. With 100m to go, Nelson was at a full sprint and wasn’t to be denied. An awesome race for the Chico native who led nearly every step of this race, while carrying nearly the entire field to major Pr’s. Shaw closed well and hit a nice NCAA provisional 37:28 time, which would have won the event a year ago. Allison Ivie’s impressive 38:24 debut placed her 8th overall, but would have been 2nd in the ’06 version of this event. A very fast evening of 10k running! Nelson’s win gave the ‘Cats both running victories for Friday and definitely set the tempo for Saturday’s events.

Tim Tollefson and Mark Batres mid race in flight over a barrier
|
|
Men’s Steeplechase:
What a great race this was! Chico would send three runners to the line today, headlined by Two time defending CCAA steeple champ Tim Tollefson who hoped to make it three in a row. The ‘Cats would also send RS frosh Thomas Whitcomb and Jordan Page to the line, each having enjoyed a great year of development over a variety of distances.
The biggest threat to Tollefson’s title chances would surely come from Pomona Senior Mark Batres who’d not run the Steeplechase race at any meet this year. In fact, Batres hasn’t run a steeple since his true frosh season five years ago when he clocked an impressive 9:18 NCAA qualifying mark. But of course Batres was coming off the 10k win the evening before and his legs would surely be tired right!?!? Well, from watching his run on Saturday I’m not sure how tired he was, given the performance he turned in. The plan for Tollefson would be to keep the pace honest from the front, knowing that a quick pace would hurt Batres’ chances of staying close to the lead, especially over the final laps. As the gun sounded Tim took control of the race from the front and Batres followed off his shoulder. The initial 400m was covered in 71 seconds, and Batres quickly moved past Tollefson as if 9:00 pace wasn’t quick enough. Tollefson, knowing that this was definitely an honest tempo, tucked in and accepted the leading duties that Batres was providing. Batres towed the pair away from the chasing field and through 1600m in 4:50 (9:04 pace). Tollefson followed for another lap, but upon realizing that the split was a 75, he immediately went around the tiring Bronco and took the lead. The next revolution was a 71, followed by a 73 during which Batres finally fell off the pace. Tollefson was now in control of the race and just needed to successfully negotiate the final water jump and barriers to claim his third victory. Not giving up the chase but also not quite having enough in the tank to catch Tollefson, Batres hammered over the final 400m. Tollefson hit the tape in a seasonal best 9:10.10 while Batres finished only 2 seconds behind with a 9:12 run. Not to be lost in this Very exciting race were the performances of Whitcomb and Fairley. With quite a few 9:30’s seed times entered, including the two ‘Cats, everyone knew it would be a tight finish for the final scoring spots. As he has so often this season Fairley closed very well over the final 500m, including a wicked stretch run that included a lean finish that just missed UCSD’s top barrier guy LeViex. Thomas closed well also, and claimed the 7th spot, while each collected substantial PR’s in the process.

Women’s Steeple:
Or the only women's distance race NOT won by a Wildcat. Without Dinora Moran in the field, the Cats weren’t expected to challenge for a scoring spot in this year’s steeplechase. Moran who’d run 11:20’s early in the season has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in her water pit landing leg and is out for the season. Adding to the Wildcat’s woes with the steeple was an injury that had taken Junior Kellie Stephens out of training for much of the Spring and Soph Ondi Foster had come down sick in the days leading up to the race. Things weren’t looking too good for the Chico crew, so a point or two would be nice in this one.
I’d earlier mentioned Lindsay Nelson’s unique ability to lock into even paces regardless of what’s going on around her. .. Well, Kellie Stephens also has this ability. With some time spent on developing a plan to take advantage of those who would definitely go out too hard in the early laps, Kellie and Ondi set forth for their steeple final with no one behind them. In fact by 400m the two trailed the nearest runner by 4-5 seconds already. As the laps wore on, and the quick starters ahead began to fade, Stephens kept notching 95 second laps and one by one, runners came back to her. With 400m to go, Stephens dug deep onto the well and slipped all the way to a 97.0 lap (a full 1.5 seconds off her quickest revolution) but closed well to hold on to a surprising 7th place finish. Here are Kellie’s Splits for those who can acknowledge smart running. 95.2, 95.9, 96.3, 96.2, 95.6, 96.3, 97.0, and :50.69 for the remaining 230meters. An awesome race for Stephens who hadn’t run the event since last year’s CCAA race. Foster, suffering from a virus or bad cold struggled, but competed hard and finished with a respectable 13:29 time.

Women’s 1500m:
There were some exciting races this weekend, and many of them included Wildcat runners, but the women’s 1500m final was definitely one of the most exciting in my mind. Chico would send one athlete to the line in this event, Sarah Montez who’s PR was a full 8 seconds slower than both UCSD’s Dianne Dunn, and CSLA’s Karla Alburez. All three had met the evening before over the 3k distance and Alburez and Dunn each had beaten Montez. Expecting a possible tactical early pace, I really liked Sarah’s chances to win this race, especially given how quickly she’d closed in the 3k the evening before. The plan was to do no leading until inside the last lap, and when the lead was taken, it should be a winning move, or at least a good shot at one. The race unfolded just as hoped as the early pace was indeed soft. Montez placed herself on the rail in third position on the heels of Dunn and Alburez who led the field through relatively slow 78 and 77 second laps. In the third lap Dunn made a move and Montez covered it nicely. A 71 third revolution had surprisingly separated the two from Alburez, and now Sarah matched Dunn’s quickening stride. Waiting for the time to pounce, the big move was made over the final 150 when Sarah swept around Dunn. Just as Montez took the lead and assumed the inside down the stretch toward the finish Dunn moved up to Sarah’s shoulders and now they ran even, stride for stride down the final straight. The crowd screamed loudly as the two raced to the tape. Montez, once a sprinter as a Frosh/Soph in HS, used the leg-speed and final lean to capture her first CCAA title, while upsetting both the #1 and #2 seeds in the field. A glance at the stopwatch showed that the pair had covered the final 300m in 49 seconds and the final 800m in 2:18! Sarah’s finish time was also a 2 second PR, which was very surprising given the slowish early pace.

Men’s 1500m:
A year ago the ‘Cats had swept the top 5 spots in this race in what was definitely a statement race that buoyed the team’s title chances. A year later 4 of the 5 were back and a plan was developed to hopefully secure a 1-4 finish. The biggest threats to the Wildcats’ sweep hopes would be a few of the top Pomona runners. Gerardo Rabelo was a former JC State Champ at the 15 distance but had yet to run faster than 3:57 this season. True Frosh Derek De Santiago had run 4:14 for 1600m in HS last year, so he would also be a threat to the ‘Cats chances.
The plan for the ‘Cats was that Bauhs would run from the front, in an attempt to run a solo 3:45 type run @ an even 60 second pace. Marquez and Serrano would hopefully work together at a 62 per lap rate, trying to keep things fairly honest, hoping this might shake the Pomona guys after a few laps. Wickman, who needed to double back for the 800m in only an hour was instructed to cover the Pomona guys and do no more work than what was needed to assure the sweep. Well, as it turns out Rabelo would become a major thorn in the sides of Marquez, Serrano, and Wickman. After a failed attempt to box in Bauhs in the initial 200m, Bauhs successfully found daylight and sailed through 300 and 400m @ 44, and 59 seconds. As Bauhs recorded initial splits of 1:58, and 2:58 Rabelo and Co. were making things difficult for the Wildcat men behind. Serrano and Marquez moved through a few overzealous fast starters after 800m and now gave chase to Rabelo who’d passed through 800m in 2:02ish. Wickman also hung close enough to Rabelo, but none of the guys expected he’d still be around at 1200m which was reached in the mid 3:0’s. As Bauhs tied up slightly but easily hung on for the win, his teammates behind hammered the final 300m in an attempt to break the lone Pomona standout. Wickman passed what appeared to be a beaten Rabelo with 100m remaining but just as he started to cruise to the tape, Rabelo snuck back up and passed him back at the line. Wickman hit his second fastest time ever while taking third, and Marquez stopped the clock with a nice 3:52.32 PR. Serrano hung on for his second fastest mark ever for 1500m (3:54) giving the ‘Cats 4 of the top 5 finishers in this year’s race. Not quite as dominant as the year before, but a very entertaining race to watch! Bauhs’ final 3:46 time ranks him #3 on the NCAA list, giving him Top-3 NCAA marks in three different events!!!

Women’s 800m:
The Wildcats would send the top three seeds to the line for the women’s 800m final this year. Coach Trevino’s Kayla Davis and Melissa Sinclair had each run 2:15/2:16 marks this year, while Lindsay Brown had broken through at the Stanford meet last week while posting a 2:14 pr. Today the three would move their way to the front nicely over the final 400m. Silva took the lead from 250m out, and Brown countered the move on her heels. Sinclair separated from Sonoma’s top gal April Mongomery over the final 100m and the three strode toward the finish with a nice 1,2,3 sweep. Silva’s 2:14 was a substantial PR and vaults her into the All Time CSUC list just ahead of Brown’s mark from the week previous.

Men’s 800m:
How do you top a 1-3 sweep? Well of course you take 1-5 of course. This is what the CSUC men’s 800m crew did on Saturday. This isn’t so easy to do when the top seeded guy is a 1:51.60 runner from another team, but the Chico men still found a way to highlight our depth in this event with a nice sweep. Brian Nelson took the initial pace guiding the pack through 400m in 55 seconds with the entire field following his stride. Coach Trevino’s David Wellman took control from the front at the 500m mark and upped the ante for the field. All four Wildcat teammates followed closely as did #1 seed Daniel Anderson, the only Non-Cat still in the hunt for the win. Off the final turn Wellman still held the lead with Anderson running just off his shoulders in lane 2. Clinton Hayes was closing quickly to the right of Anderson as was Michael Wickman who was closing strong even after a tough 1500m final less than two hours before. As these 6 talented 800m runners sprinted to the finish, the black and red Chico jerseys all seemed to envelop and pass the tiring Anderson of UCSD. Timing his kick the best was Michael Wickman who would take the title with a sizzling final 100m stretch. Second was Wellman, with Hayes only .08 back, and Nelson only .01 behind him. Coach Trevino’s Bobby McNiel followed a quarter second back, but beat Anderson to the line to guarantee the sweep. The final results showed that all five ‘Cats remarkably finished between 1:52.41 and 1:52.83 an amazing spread for five guys from the same team!

Women’s 5,000m:
The ‘Cats would send 4 to the line in the women’s 5k and each would factor into the scoring by the end of the race! Led by Mary Torres who covered the early pace created by #1 seed Emily McGregor of UCSD and Majia Rohde the Cats all raced very tough in this event. Torres and Rohde trailed McGregor for nearly 3200m before the two broke away and traded the lead over the final 1600m. With 400m remaining Torres found another gear and gradually escaped the grasp of the tiring CSLA runner. Mary’s final 400m of 76 secured her 3/5 double, which was made famous by former teammate Katie Lee who nailed this double three consecutive years. Lindsay Nelson fought hard trying to catch McGregor but fell short due to the tired 10k legs that supported her. The final 17:44 mark would have been a PR coming into the season for Nelson, so her double stands as a very fine weekend of racing for sure! Also doubling back well was RS Frosh Julie Shaw who hit an impressive 18:15 mark after her 10k the evening before. Rounding out the scoring was Aisha Kamala who entered the race thinking 18:45 might be a good time, given her recent health issues. Thankfully the Junior found an amazing rhythm on the oval and worked through the field nicely while posting an impressive 18:17 Pr! An excellent way for the ‘Cats to finish their weekend of distance racing.

Men’s 5,000m:
Traditionally the 5,000m is a race full of athletes doubled back from one event or another. This year was no different as almost everyone in the field had competed in either the 10k the day before, or the steeple/1500 events earlier in the day. Pomona’s Batres had done both the steeple and 10k before stepping to the line for his third race in 2 days. The ultimate goal for the ‘Cats in this event was to hopefully take the 1-3 sweep, while also hopefully placing a few others among the top 8 scorers. The plan was for Serrano to cover any moves that Batres or Humboldt’s Peach might make in the early going, while Bauhs and Marquez marked the chase pack. Much like a cycling race with plenty of tactics involved, the plan unfolded just as hoped. Peach took a commanding early lead (being the only fresh runner in the field and having a 14:44 pr) and after 1600m Serrano set out after the tall Lumberjack from Humboldt. By 3k Serrano was on Peache’s heels and Miramontes, Marquez, and Bauhs marked the moves of Batres who was attempting to give chase to Serrano and Peach. Over the final 1600m Serrano dispatched a tiring Peach, while Bauhs led Marquez eventually up into 3rd position. Now with 600m remaining the ‘Cats ran 1-3 and things were going quite well. Batres managed to pull away from Miramontes, but the senior from Chico gave Everything he had to make sure no one else from another team made their way between himself and the finish. Also running quite well was Eddie Serna who nearly tied his PR the day after a tough 10k. With a 60 second final lap Bauhs made his way up to teammate Serrano and the two crossed the line together at 14:40, separated by only .02 seconds. Marquez, doubling back nicely after a big PR for 1500m, took the bronze in 14:45. After two green jerseys hit the tape in Peach and Batres, Miramontes finished his Wildcat career with another stellar effort. Serna capped the scoring and gave the ‘Cats 5 inside the 8 scoring spots with his 15:14 finish time.
Serrano’s win makes him a three time defending champion of the 5k event, on the heels of former teammate Tyler Graff’s three CCAA 5k titles. Nothing like keeping these titles in the Wildcat family. With 13:40 Soph Bauhs returning for two more seasons with the ‘Cats, this streak appears to be well on it’s way toward a few more years.
