Friday March 30, 2007 @8:30am: Men’s 10k Heat III. Senior Antonio Miramontes cut nearly 30 seconds off his former PR in this run, despite not learning of his acceptance into the Stanford meet until the day before the race. Yours truly had e mailed the meet director on Tuesday asking that they consider allowing Miramontes, a graduating senior the opportunity to run in their added morning section of the 10k. Not knowing if the meet director would even consider such an option at this late date, Antonio did Tuesday’s prescribed 4 miles of tempo running on the CSUC track @ 5:05 pace. Had we known that he would indeed be allowed into the meet, the workout of course would not have been run. Miramontes, not one to shy away from challenges put the workout behind him and switched into competitive mode as soon as he found that he was indeed accepted into the meet. Given his modest 31:18 PR going into the event, and also knowing most others entered were shooting to run under 30 minutes, Antonio locked into his pace early and worked with competitors from Notre Dame and Florida State for the initial 5k which was reached in 15:15. Following the 5k Miramontes led the group of three for the next 8 laps, eventually dropping the F. State runner. With 2k remaining the Notre Dame runner bolted by Miramontes having used his energy to get close enough to the finish. Miramontes was unable to counter Mike Popejoy’s move and now ran alone, trying to keep the laps in the 73-74 range. Unfortunately Antonio’s pace slowed somewhat, but he fought hard to maintain damage control. A sub 70 final revolution gave Miramontes a 30:49 finish time and his first NCAA provisional track mark. His time replaces Stacy Van Horn a former NCAC 10k champ as #10 on the Wildcat All Time Top 10 List.

| 800m Women’s “B Heats” Friday morning
Junior Lindsey Brown recorded a nice 2:16.04 PR for her season debut in the 800m on Friday. Brown’s time moves her into the #8 spot on the All Time CSUC list but appears to be far from where she’ll finish the season given the relative ease in which she recorded this mark.

Men’s 800m B Heats Friday Morning: (3 Entrants, 3 PR’s, and a 1:52 average)
Three ‘Cats toed the line this morning and all three PR’d. With the NCAA provisional mark being 1:53.00, Clinton Hayes and Brian Nelson missed NCAA marks by a combined .11 seconds! Given that it was the first open 800m for all three, it’s very likely that each will finish their season @ the NCAA meet in North Carolina this Spring.
Clinton Hayes was placed in the fastest heat of the morning section, while teammates Michael Wickman and Brian Nelson were each entered in Heat II. Hayes who’d run the initial 200m of his Wildcat relay 800m leg MUCH too fast, started more conservative today, and enjoyed a very fast final 100m while passing several runners down the stretch. Wickman who’d been buried during the first lap of his heat rolled off the penultimate turn with 300m remaining in lane 3 with his eyes set on the leaders who’d made a break ahead. Using his trademark kick coming off the final turn Wickman rolled up everyone except Stanford’s Lauren Jespersen who he missed for the win by .18 seconds. Wickman’s finish time would have placed him second in the first and “faster” heat as well. Teammate Brian Nelson who’s enjoyed a great start to the season notched a 1:53.09 PR while missing the NCAA standard by a mere .09 seconds.

Tim Tollefson stays out of trouble going wide at the barrier
|
Men’s Steeplechase Heat III Friday Evening: (Tollefson runs NCAA 9:12 mark)
A year ago as a Soph, Tim Tollefson jumped onto the NCAA scene in a big way recording a 20+ second PR in the barrier event at the Stanford Invit. This year he wouldn’t quite improve this mark, but even on a “mediocre” day Tollefson the 2 time CCAA steeple champ, notched a very impressive 9:12 mark. Running among a physical and aggressive pack the entire race Tollefson spent some quality time learning how to run in lane II, and trying to keep out of trouble with the crowded barriers and water jumps. At one point while hurdling in a large group, Tollefson sustained a pretty deep cut to his trailing hand as he was in the air going over a hurdle. Apparently an opponent’s lead spike glanced his hand, which for some time took Tim’s mind off the normal pains that 7.5 laps of hurdling can cause. Thankfully Tim was able to find his way toward the front of the pack and with 2 laps remaining he ran in a great position to possibly win the race. Unfortunately the early jostling and running in the outside lanes, had taken it’s toll on the Junior from Rocklin, CA and Tim lost a few spots and seconds over the final 600m. Tim’s 9:12 time is his second fastest ever and is an NCAA provisional mark, that should be good enough to gain him entry in this year’s NCAA championships.

Scotty Bauhs takes his turn at the lead in cranking out 69s
|
|
Men’s 10,000m Heat II: (Bauhs goes Sub 29 and how Torres collects an Assist)
In basketball assists are a big part of the game... In track... Well, there isn’t such a thing as an assist right? Well on Friday night, we did have an assist and it came from Aaron Torres a member of our men’s distance squad. Aaron who’d just returned from a short run around the Stanford campus had run into Scotty Bauhs who was warming up for his upcoming attempt at a sub 29 minute 10k. Upon returning to the track Torres noticed that there were only a few laps remaining in the 5k race that led up to Bauhs’ heat of the 10k. Aaron found yours truly and told me that he thought that Scotty might be under the impression that the women’s 10k was Before his and that he’d just run into him while running on the Stanford Campus. Looking at the clock on the scoreboard I realized that the current race had only 2-3 laps remaining, then the men’s 10k would take center stage. Given the fact that meet management had been behind schedule all evening, they were being quite prompt in starting races as soon as the final person crossed the line in the previous one. Scrambling for thoughts as to what to do from here, I made my way to the perimeter of the track stadium where the athletes who were warming up, would usually return to the track area. Thankfully I spotted the familiar gait of Bauhs trotting toward the stadium, completely unaware that his race would start in 5 minutes. I’ll spare the details, but words were exchanged and Scotty’s normal 35-40 minute routine that normally includes long strides, stretching, and a bathroom stop, was all condensed into a 5 minute span. Making my way to the check in area where the meet officials check out hip numbers I realized the staff had exited the area. Scott and I fumbled through hip numbers and managed to find one’s that matched his seed among the 30+ runners in the field. A few shake-out strides and a march to the start line, and Bauhs was off and running, chasing another Chico State record and landmark performance. Of course let’s credit this assist to Torres as no one else had realized that Bauhs was about to miss a pretty important race.
Thankfully the first few revolutions of the track were somewhat conservative... At least for this talented group, most of whom were chasing the DI NCAA 10k standard of 29:05 or better. Bauhs tucked into mid pack and recorded a 2:21 first 800m looking smooth and unaffected by the adjusted warm up routine. Lap three saw a change in the pace as the leaders notched things down into the sub 70 rhythm needed to go under 29 minutes. 1600m was reached in 4:39 with Bauhs having made his way toward the front of a surging pack. Mile 2, quicker than the first brought Bauhs through 3200m in 9:15 and to assure the wild Chico Crowd of how he was feeling Scotty flashed a smile to the “Chiiiiiccccoooo” cheering faithful. During the third mile Kenyan duo Barnabus Kirui and Aron Rono took the lead and put a few strides on a 10-man chase pack in which Bauhs was running. Looking back on Bauhs’ performance his only regret might be the move that he made in lap 11 to bridge from the group to the heels of Kirui. In less than a lap Kirui had tired of leading and moved into lane two, motioning to the Soph from Chico State, to take the lead. Bauhs obliged and ran a 67 second 12th lap separating himself from Kirui and the pack. Now Bauhs ran alone from the front passing 5k a few strides ahead of the field @ 14:26 (just a few seconds slower than his ‘06 5k best). After spending a bit more than a mile off the front, Bauhs was absorbed by the chase pack and the group hit the metric 4 miles in 18:30, and 8k in 23:07. With 1600m remaining Bauhs ran at the tail end of a 4 man group that was led by a powerful runner Jeff Powers of Central Michigan. Powers hammered the pace and within the next 400m Bauhs lost contact with the three ahead. Lap 23 (a 71.4) was Bauhs’ slowest of the race as he struggled to keep the form that had put him in position for a big PR. Bauhs hit the metric 6 mi (24 laps) in 27:48 with Illinois runner Trent Hoerr passing him and Portand’s Kinsella hot on his heels. Off the final turn Bauhs found another gear and re-passed Hoerr and sprinted to the finish stopping the clock at 28:54, thus becoming the first Wildcat to break the 29 minute barrier for the 10k distance.
The 28:54 was a full minute faster than the former DII best mark for the season coming into the weekend, but Scotty’s stay atop the DII leader-board was short lived given the blazing 28:06 winning time that DII XC champ Nicodemus Naimadu posted while defeating American 1/2 marathon record holder Ryan Hall in Saturday’s A Heat. Once again we’ll have our hands full at the NCAA championships w/ Naimadu.

Women’s 10,000m (Two more NCAA marks and #4 and #6 All-Time Best CSUC Performances)
Chico’s Mary Torres and Lindsay Nelson were the only Non-DI standouts allowed into the women’s 10k field on Friday evening. Torres took aim at the 36 minute barrier, while Nelson eyed the 36:30 mark as a goal. If the two could at least finish under 37 minutes they would surely punch their tickets to the NCAA meet, given the times it’s taken to qualify in the past. The difficult thing for each, would be the fact that most others entered were shooting for much quicker marks that it would take to gain entry into the DI championships. At the race began Torres locked into 85 seconds per lap rhythm working with athletes from Idaho, Loyola, and Purdue. The four hit 1600m in 5:42 and 3200m in 11:26 and would split the first 5k in 17:50. With two miles remaining Torres’ 85-86’s started to turn towards the 90 second per lap pace, and she lost contact with her small group. Clipping along mostly by herself at her own quick pace was Junior Lindsay Nelson a Chico Native and 11:50 HS two miler. Nelson who ran 25 laps a year ago in Eugene Or, completely solo, ran most of tonight’s race on her own as well. Hitting early splits of 5:55, 11:48, and 18:25 (5k) Nelson was picking up steam and looked awesome going into her second 5k of the night. Nelson hit a series of 87’s and 88’s in the final 5k and closed with an 81 final revolution to earn herself a substantial PR, and a time that should qualify her for this May’s NCAA meet in North Carolina. Nelson’s final 5k (18:15) highlighted a nice negative split effort. Torres, as strong and tough as any athlete that I’ve worked with, suffered through a difficult final 8 laps, but still managed a substantial PR of her own, clocking a 36:29. These times also ranked highly on the All Time CSUC list as Torres moves up to #4 and Nelson now at #6.

Last year Chabot college started a Stanford Overflow meet for those who missed the Stanford entry marks, but still wanted to run fast times @ distance races. No Wildcats made the trip across the bay for the event the first year, but this year Junior Sarah Montez was sent to Chabot in search of her first sub 18 minute 5k. Montez achieve this and more, winning the event in with a nice 17:47 Pr. Sarah led the entire final mile, so it should be interesting to see her progress when she’s in a field where she can be pushed by a faster field. This mark just missed both the NCAA provisional minimum (17:43) and the #10 All time CSUC mark of 17:44.

Saturday March 31st:
Senior Charlie Serrano who’d run 14:06 at last year’s Stanford Invit spent the Fall, Winter and early Spring months logging more miles than ever before, while hammering through difficult workout after difficult workout, all in an effort to break the 14 minute barrier for the 5k event. Everything was on track, until about 2.5 weeks ago when Serrano developed a stubborn case of IT band tendonitis which has put a serious dent in his training volume and intensities. Given the lack of training leading into the week of Stanford we’d decided that Charlie wouldn’t race, but would hopefully return for a late season attempt at the Cardinal Invit if good health was achieved in the meantime. Although still ailing last week Serrano decided to ramp up the training, and found that the pain was no worse than it had been before..... so it was decided at the last minute that Charlie would run Stanford with the goal of hopefully hitting at least a sub 14:30 mark that would hopefully secure his spot on the line at the NCAA’s later in the season. Struggling in a heat full of low 14 minute runners who hadn’t missed the training he had, Charlie stuck to the back of the main pack for as long as he could on Saturday passing the mile in 4:33, and 3200 in 9:14. The final mile was difficult and painful but Serrano held on to finish in 14:27. Although he wasn’t too happy with the performance, Charlie is full of fire and if the body will continue to work with him while he returns to consistent training, we can expect a good run at the Cardinal Invit at the end of the month.

Saturday March 31st:
Men’s 1500m B Sections (Wickman rolls 3:53 and Nelson Pr’s again)
Michael Wickman and Brian Nelson would double back from yesterday’s 800m races with 1500 runs today. Also competing on Saturday would be Nick Clinton who’s coming off two weeks of sickness, which unfortunately is still hampering his performances. Wickman rolled even splits while recording his second best time ever for the metric mile distance. His 3:53.00 final time is an NCAA provisional mark and missed his PR by just .50 seconds. Nelson cut 3 seconds off his 15 pr with his 4:00.74 performance, leaving him just shy of the 4 minute barrier. Nick Clinton ran even 65 pace for three laps, before his body shut down, leaving him well short of his 3:56 Pr set last Spring. Note: Former North Section runner Kenny Frank placed 33rd
