2008 CCAA Championships - Jesse Owens Track, Cal State LA Chico State men claim 5th straight CCAA title, women second to UC San Diego |
Commentary and photos provided by CSUC Distance Coach Gary Towne
|
I’m proud to announce that the Wildcat track teams exceeded expectations this weekend while representing our university quite well at the 2008 version of the CCAA championships. The men’s team won the team title convincingly, even while red shirting 4 of the top 5 800m runners from last year’s CCAA meet, and while resting Senior Tim Tollefson who was a three time defending champ in the steeple (Tim had been diagnosed with Mono the week before). The women’s team finished second overall behind a very talented UCSD women’s squad, but that didn’t stop the distance ladies from winning three of the six distance events offered. The best part of the conference meet as is usually the case was watching the athletes compete in an environment where winning was the first goal and running a specific time was secondary. Given the heat and poor air quality in LA, times were indeed out the window as many races were tactical one’s with quick finishes. I’ll do my best to outline the distance finals from the 2008 CCAA meet below.

Women’s 3,000m:
Our winning streak for the women’s 3k extended back 5 years before the start of this year’s CCAA women’s 3k race with Katie Lee having won the ‘03, ‘04, and ‘05 versions, Jen James the ‘06, and Mary Torres the ‘07 version. Now in ‘08 it would be Sarah Montez’ turn. The Senior from Simi Valley running in front of her father, grandparents and other family members blitzed a final 200m of 33 seconds to seal the deal over SF State’s Anna Bretan. Senior Lindsay Nelson struggled today as did Frosh Kara Lubieniecki, as each seemed to be under the weather with cold like symptoms. After running among the lead pack through the first half in the low 5:0’s both Nelson and Lubieniecki fell back in the field. Thankfully both would rebound fairly well the next day in their respective events to add to the ‘Cats points total.

Men’s 10,000m:
Ultra talented Jasper Peach of Humboldt State won an inside battle between himself and Stanislaus’ 30:35 guy Bobby Oliveira to claim the title for the ‘Jacks. The Chico trio Jeff Wilson, Ruben Alvidrez and Thomas Whitcomb scooped up valuable points while working together most of the race. Alvidrez won the sprint to the finish to gain the final podium spot. For the second straight year Soph Eddie Serna nailed down a few points toward the team title with his 7th place finish (Top 8 score in each event).

|
|
Women’s 10,000m:
Senior Aisha Kamala would have her hands full in this race while trying to run her first 10k in several years. Kamala had missed several weeks of training in mid April and had only just returned to workouts several weeks before conference. Top seeds for the event were Pomona’s duo of Claudia Garcia (36:35 PR) and Adrienne Schum (36:50’s/JC State Champ while at Mt Sac). Garcia led for the majority of the first 2-3 miles while the pack whittled down eventually to Kamala, Garcia, and Schumm. Schumm threw in a big surge in the fourth mile that only Kamala could answer while Garcia started to fade. Schumm was too strong though, building a lead over Kamala that couldn’t be overcome, given the lack of fitness caused by the mid season injury. Kamala fought hard though and would hold on for a strong 2nd place finish some 18 seconds behind the Pomona Senior. Soph’s Allison Ivie and Colleen Joyce both running their first 10k’s of the year (Joyce’s first ever) ran very smart and even races while nailing down scoring 6th and 7th place finishes.

Day II (Saturday)
Thankfully everyone who had run trials on Friday advanced safely into the finals in their respective events.
Women’s Steeple:
With a long history of success in this event we were excited to see how things might unfold in the women’s barrier race this year. Entering the race we had the 2,4,8 and 9 seeds, but as everyone knows, they run the race for a reason and when you mix hot windy conditions with a tough distance race, anything can happen. That was definitely the case, as Humboldt’s Soph Megan Rolland ran as if she were on a mission from the gun, establishing an early lead and never looking back. Liliana Hernandez gave Rolland a great race, but the 3k the evening before took it’s toll as Rolland ran to the win. Chico’s Shannon McVannel, Jessica Brieno, and Jessica Nelson ran fairly close the majority of the race moving through slowing runners in the middle laps but settling a bit too much in the later ones. With three scorers in the final 8 it wasn’t a bad day, but not quite as good as we’d hoped. The silver lining of this event though is that four of the five entrants for the ‘Cats were freshman and have great improvements to look forward to in the coming years.

Jordan Fairley running to his first CCAA Title while keeping a 5 year steeple win streak in the ‘Cats corner
|
|
Men’s Steeplechase:
The men’s steeple left any bad taste that we might have had in our mouth following the women’s rough effort completely behind us. With 3 time defending champ Tim Tollefson sitting at home dealing with Strep Throat and Mono, Sophs Jordan Fairley and Thomas (BOB) Whitcomb were left to keep our stranglehold on CCAA steeple titles in the family (we’d won the past 5 CCAA steeples before Saturday). On paper Fairley had the top seed with his 9:11 set at the Chico meet earlier in the season. Humboldt’s Jesus Solis would be a tough competitor though with his 9:16 pr and 1:54 and 3:57 pr’s at the shorter distances. The plan for Jordan was to let Solis set the early pace, and try to win the race inside the final 800m. As the gun went off Humboldt’s Solis made a fatal mistake in the first lap, jumping out to a huge early lead and cruising through 400m (over hurdles) in 66 seconds. Given the heat, Solis’ lack of efficiency over the barriers, and the fact that Fairley wasn’t taking the bait and going out with him, Solis had little chance to win. Biding his time wisely Fairley chipped away at Solis’ lead and caught him inside the fifth lap. As was the plan Fairley waited until 800m to go to make his final push to the line. Solis reacted for 200m before reality struck (66 seconds of it) and Fairley sailed off to his first CCAA victory. Perhaps the best race within the race though wasn’t the one between Fairley and Solis, but the one between Whitcomb and the rest of the field. Having run the 10k the evening before Whitcomb was entered only to grab a point or two if he could. Tucking in behind a group of 9:40s guys Thomas hung strong lap by lap and eventually would move into third place for good with 500m remaining. Although his final time (9:47) wasn’t smoking fast, it did earn the team some nice points toward the eventual title and plenty more than the coaches could have expected given the 10k the evening before. Fairley’s win gives the ‘Cats 6 straight in the barrier event.

Kayla Silva with 300m to go and about to sweep by the UCSD runners. Teammate Sarah Montez eventually works her way around a UCSD box and would follow to a 1-2 finish!
|
|
Women’s 1500m:
An interesting race on paper. UCSD had 4:31 and 4:33 runners on the line in Dianne Dunn and frosh standout Brianna Schofield. Chico matched with Sarah Montez (4:33-Defending champ) and Kayla Silva (4:35/Defending 800m champ). Montez had won the 1500m the year before by upsetting Dunn of UCSD with a sizzling 2:17 final 800m after a slow start. With Silva carrying an 800m PR and Montez being a dangerous kicker, the plan was to sit and wait until the final 400m before pouncing on a fast final lap. Of course this would be determined by whether the UCSD gals would allow a slowish pace to happen again. Just as expected UCSD did allow the pace to dawdle early and the Chico women bode their time among the pack, waiting for the fireworks to begin. Nothing major happened until 300m remaining when Silva jumped on the pace. Just as a sprinter does in cycling, the Senior Chico High alum hammered to the front, and didn’t look back. Seeing her teammate making her move, Montez followed. Schofield and Dunn reacted, but neither could match the stride frequency of the two ‘Cats who closed the final lap with 66 and 67 splits for a 1-2 finish. Frosh, Lubieniecki pushed hard down the stretch, but lost a kick with Stanislaus’ Cherise McNair.

Men’s 1500m:
Speaking of streaks, The ‘Cats carried a four year roll into the metric mile event which dated back to Chris Eggers’ run in ‘04, Springhorn’s wallop of the field in ‘05, and Bauhs’ two titles in ‘06, and ‘07. With Bauhs in the field again and fresh off his sub 4 mile the eventual champion was as close to guaranteed as it could be, with the main question being how slow could Bauhs win this race, while saving his legs for the big 10k the next evening. Thankfully the eventual winning time would be 3:57 which was due in large part to his teammates Manny Mejia and Angel Marquez’ willingness to Not force the early pace (Marquez and Mejia had the second and third best marks coming in). With UCSD’s Jake LeViex entered with a 3:55 seed, it wasn’t a guarantee that the ‘Cats threesome would take the top three spots but the plan was to keep the pace conservative for the first 900m before taking off with 600m remaining. As expected no one wanted to take the front with an honest pace, so mid 60’s were enjoyed by the field. With 600m remaining Bauhs hit the turn at sub 60 per lap pace, but unfortunately both Marquez and Mejia were burried in the pack along the rail. While they worked to get out of their predicament LeVieux covered the move and ran on Bauhs’ heels down the straight to the bell lap. With 350m to go the UCSD Soph decided to make a move for the win, and Bauhs glancing over expected to see Marquez or Mejia, but instead was surprised at the sight of the tall Triton runner. Bauhs caught another gear to hold LeVieux into lane 2 through the turn and powered ahead down the penultimate straightaway. Mejia, having finally broken free from the pack gave chase, but didn’t seem to be making up ground on Bauhs and the trailing LeVieux. With 150m to go, LeVieux started to pay for his big surge 400m previous and Mejia started making up ground on him. Bauhs sailed down the final straight to win his third straight CCAA 1500 title and Mejia blew past LeVieux in the final 40m to give the ‘Cats the 1-2 finish. LeVieux held on enough to hold off Marquez who admitted later that he was saving himself for the 5k a bit. RS Frosh Matt LoForte was off his 3:58 PR, but still managed to squeak out a point for the team with his 8th place finish.

Senior Lindsey Brown after winning her first CCAA title!
|
|
Women’s 800m:
With only an hour to recover from her 1500m victory Kayla Silva did her best to both cool down and warm up between races. Senior teammate Lindsay Brown who’d finished 2nd in the CCAA race the year before to Silva knew that her main competition would be in holding off April Montgomery of Stanislaus who’d run a 2:14 this season. It was hoped that Silva might be able to take down the fresh Montgomery, but the odds were against it given the lack of recovery between the 15 and the 8. After Montgomery led the first lap through in a slowish 68 seconds, Brown took control of the front and accelerated. Not going too fast too soon Brown gradually built her momentum over the final 300m and hit the final stretch at full stride. There was no denying the senior the title this year. The only question was whether Silva could run down a podium spot and perhaps Montgomery. The podium was reached as Silva caught teammate Johntay Cokley (4/8 runner) just before the line. Adding teammate Anna Eicholtz into the scoring the ‘Cats had no less than four in the top 7 at the line.

Angel Marquez leads Jasper Peach and teammate Brendan Scanlon while they all make it look easy by running with their eyes closed!
|
|
Men’s 5,000m:
With almost everyone in the field doubling back from another event no one felt like pressing the pace today. A lead pack stuck together for around 1600m with a variety of folks taking the fore. In the second mile Chico Junior Angel Marquez knew that he needed to crank the pace down to rid himself of Humboldt’s Jasper Peach who was doubling back from the 10k the evening before. For several laps a group of three ran together with Marquez in the front, Peach in second, and Chico’s frosh Brendan Scanlon in third. With the three completely clear of the pursuing group Marquez kept the laps near 71 seconds lap after lap, until Peach finally fell from the pace. By this time though Peach had pulled clear of Scanlon and now the top three ran separated by several meters between one another to the tape. Alvidrez doubled back from the 10k with a nice fifth place effort, giving the eventual champions 3 of the top 5 places. Marquez’ title kept the longest CCAA win streak in tact at 7 years running. Tyler Graff had won the CCAA three straight years, followed by teammate Charlie Serrano who took the next three versions, and now Marquez joins this elite group of All Americans.

Women’s 5,000m:
The women’s 5k was very much the same as the men’s race with three women eventually breaking away from the pack. Chico’s Lindsay Nelson was the lone Wildcat in the break, and she held her ground until the trio hit the bell lap. Nelson who has a 1500m PR of 4:57 was no match for Bretan’s 4:36 closing speed. Bretan would claim the win today with UCSD’s 10k school record holder Emily McGregor taking the runner-up honors. Nelson closed in 80 for third and fighting by herself for the final two miles was Senior Aisha Kamala who finished her final CCAA race with a very respectable 4th place effort (the day after her 2nd place 10k!).
