2009 Oxy Invitational - Occidental College
Lubienecki, McVannel and Cannon punch their tickets to Nationals, Wickman improves upon his seeding
Commentary and photos provided by CSUC Distance Coach Gary Towne
A group of 13 distance runners from Chico State ventured to LA this weekend to participate in an annual "last chance" meet that Occidental College has put on for years. A year ago, Chico athletes enjoyed a very solid day with numerous NCAA qualifying marks, and two school records (Lindsay Brown-800m, and Kayla Silva-1500m). This year we enjoyed what might have been an even better day on the blazing quick Oxy surface. No less than 11 NCAA Provisional standards were reached by the competing Chico athletes. Perhaps the most revealing statistic was that only a few Chico runners Didn't achieve PR's on Saturday and most of these were very near-misses. Leading the list of amazing performances was Michael Wickman, who notched what has to be one of the greatest mid distance doubles in Chico State history. The Junior from Walnut Creek ran the school's 4th fastest 1500m ever-3:44.45 (#2 Non Altitude Adjusted time in DII this year) and followed that up with the school's third fastest 800m ever 1:49.38 which is the Fastest 800m by a DII athlete this year. Not to be outdone in the Amazing doubles category Sophomore Kara Lubieniecki improved her NCAA standing and cut 2 seconds off her PR for the 1500m with a nice 4:34.21 outing (#5 in CSUC history), then came back several hours later to record an Automatic NCAA mark of 17:00.34 for the 5k. The 23 second PR moves Kara to #3 on the Wildcat All Time list behind only Katie Lee and current Wildcat Assistant Jen James. I'll do my best to re-cap each amazing race below.

Women's Steeplechase:
A year ago true frosh Shannon McVannel dropped no less than 22 seconds from her PR to nab the final spot on the line at the NCAA championships with her 11:02 run. A year later and despite having a PR of 10:56 coming into the OXY meet Shannon once again sat on the NCAA bubble, ranked #17 in an event where the NCAA might only take 16 total. Given that the automatic NCAA qualifying mark for the women's steeplechase is 10:55, Shannon knew that she had only one last chance to gain this mark, and that was on Saturday in OXY. Unfortunately for Shannon, the weather wasn't exactly the best earlier in the day when they ran the steeples. Temps were warm (80-ish) and the afternoon winds were still blowing so it would take a very strong effort to gain the mark on this day. Just as she did a year ago Shannon focused on the goal at hand, and made the result happen. Thankfully for Shannon Claremont-Mudd standout Evelyn Ross was entered because after the initial 3-4 laps, the two had separated into second and third overall and the two worked together to keep the pace honest. Four laps was reached in a swift 5:33 but the pace was slowing and the heat was setting in. Needing an 85 second lap average Shannon recorded a few 87's in the third kilometer, but a nice kick as she attempted to stay with Ross, resulted in an 83 final revolution and a nice 10:52 final time. Her new PR is the third fastest steeple ever for a Wildcat and is also safely under the NCAA Auto mark, giving Shannon her ticket to Texas for next week's championships.

Women's 1500m:
Kara entered the weekend in a very similar situation as Shannon, having NCAA provisional marks in both the 1500m and the 5,000m, but neither appeared good enough to gain one of the treasured spots to the championships. At the start of the weekend I had only entered Kara in the 1500m for the OXY meet, but after looking at the meet schedule more closely and putting some thought to the situation, I decided to double-enter Kara in both the 15 and 5k to take a crack at improving her chances at each distance. Kara started the race with a PR of 4:36 that she had run while winning the 1500m at the Chico Twilight meet (remember the battle with Humboldt's Steeple Champ Rolland!?!). From what we could tell Kara would need to run around 4:33 to have a chance at going to NCAA's in the 1500m, so the goal was set to run close to the 73 second clip per lap that would be needed to reach such a time. Kara's first lap split was expectedly quick (71.5) as this was a talented field and everyone was there to run Fast so she settled in and preserved her energy for the tougher late laps. 800m was reached in 2:26 but the pace had slowed to a 74 rhythm. Lap three was too slow (76-3:42 1200) as Kara was blocked in behind a trio of women who were well on their way to running slower than 4:35. Kara finally sprang to life with 350 remaining as she started to pass the fading runners ahead. A final 300m of 51 (very quick!) brought Kara back into the NCAA picture as she stopped the clock at 4:34.21 (a 2 second PR!). Knowing this mark would improve her chances at making NCAA's, but not guarantee them, Kara now prepared for the 5k later in the evening. All Time CSUC: As mentioned previously Kara's new PR placed her #4 on the All time list behind Kayla Silva, Margaret Pridgen, Jenny Spoon, and Sarah Montez and just ahead of Katie Lee (all of whom were All Americans). Kara is in great company!

Men's 1500m:
Since the somewhat disappointing 3:46 race in the Chico Twilight, in which Michael failed to cover a move that Bauhs and Sherer had made to start lap 3 Michael has focused his energy on improving and becoming more comfortable running at and under a 60 second pace rhythm per lap. In fact a number of the workouts have been designed to shift gears off such a pace so that he can become more comfortable, and confident doing this as well. Now we hoped that the field at OXY would be good enough to offer the level of competition needed to run at least sub 3:45. Just in case the field wasn't up to snuff, I had double entered Michael in the 800m with initial intentions of scratching him if the 1500m field was solid. Thankfully I re-thought this idea through and decided it would be good for him to run in a tough 800m field after the 1500m to simulate what he will face at the NCAA meet next week in trying to double back after the 1500m final. The 15 field at OXY looked pretty good on paper, but we had hoped for more guys entered between 3:40 and 3:45. On paper Aucencio Martinez (3:40 PR from several years ago) a former NCAA champ from Adams State, Mohamed Trafeh (Former HS Standout from Duarte HS) and Phillip Reid (low 3:40's PR) appeared capable of helping a fast race happen.

Unfortunately the early pace wasn't pretty though as everyone seemed to have the idea that someone else would provide the initial momentum. Wickman had an awful start off the line and ran in the middle of a large pack that hit 200m in 31 seconds. On the backstretch Michael was able to get out of the pack and he carefully moved his way up to the shoulders of the leaders by 400m. The 400 split of 62 seconds put a serious dent in their chances of running a really fast time today, so now the pace quickened and Martinez siezed the lead and stretched the pace down while Wickman assumed a spot in second just behind the Adams alum. 800m was reached in 2:01 as Aucencio had led a reasonable 59.5 second revolution, and now Wickman sensed that if he didn't take the front and help the pace that it would turn into a kickers affair with no one running very fast. Wickman immediately upped the ante for the pack and only Martinez and Trafeh could answer the quickening pace. Wickman led the trio well clear of the field with what was a 58.5 second third 400m (1200m-3:00.10). Still leading and trying to gather a closing kick, Michael kept the hammer down while the pair behind used his momentum to get them close to the line. The sprint finish was about as predictable as a cycling finish (at least the part where the guy who leads those to the line is almost always beaten) as Trafeh and Martinez swung around Michael with 80m remaining and sprinted to the finish. Although he didn't have quite as sharp a closing sprint Michael did have the strength and speed to run a 44.1 for the final 300m, giving him his first sub 3:45 clocking. His 3:44.45 final time is the second fastest time run in DII this year (that isn't altitude adjusted) just off the 3:44.03 that two time defending NCAA 1500m champ Aaron Braun ran last weekend in Palo Alto. Michael's time also qualifies him for the USATF Championships to be held in Eugene, Oregon in June. All time CSUC Implications: Michael now sits as the #4 1500m guy on the CSUC All time list. Those ahead are: Scott Bauhs, Kim Ellison, and Steven Springhorn. When converted to a full mile Michael's time is roughly a 4:02! A very nice run for the Junior, especially given the amount of leading that he had to do and the slowish early pace.

Men's 800m (Heat 1):
Men's 800m: Two hours after he finished the 1500m Wickman toed the line among a very talented 800m field. I'm not certain of the PR's of the top seeds but I'm fairly confident that both Prince Mumba, and Tetlo Emen have both run at least 1:46 or better, and Jeff Fisher also had a quick seed time. The goal for Michael was to establish descent early positioning, not allowing himself to become buried as he had at the CAL meet several weeks before, while also trying not to get out too fast with the really quick guys up front. Michael did a wonderful job of executing the game plan putting himself in a good position early toward the back half of the field, but ahead of a few who had obviously “fudged” their marks to get into the fastest heat. Michael reached 400m at 54.19 and maintained position around the third turn. With 300m remaining he began to move up in the field and as it usually appears from the outside when someone runs even splits, Michael appeared to be accelerating with 200m remaining. In the final 100m Michael moved up into 4th place just a few meters off Emen, Mumba and Company and even with UCSB standout Ryan Martin. Martin fought back over the final 40meters and beat Wickman to the line by a fraction of a second. Having run the final lap in 54.84 Michael's final time was 1:49.38 which was a substantial improvement over the 1:49.90 run at Sac State earlier in the year. The mark also makes him the DII NCAA leader as he passes Metro's Anthony Luna (NCAA Indoor 800m Champ) by .01 seconds on the final list. Wickman also exacted a bit of revenge on Trafeh who had used his pacing to beat him in the 1500 several hours before. A great day for Michael and a nice step in the right direction as he heads into the NCAA meet and now the USATF meet in June!

Men's 800m: (Heat 2)
With no one wanting to take the pace from the gun David Wellman took the pace and drug a tight pack through 400m in an aggressive 53.8 seconds. The pace was good, but the fact that David was having to do all the work wasn't exactly what we were hoping as the Senior had hoped to dip under 1:51 Saturday. Junior Kyle Robinson who's PR coming into the day was 1:53 looked smooth following Wellman through 500m in second place overall. Alaska's 1:50 guy and UCSD's 1:51 runner Daniel Anderson sat on the Chico pair as they prepared for the finishing stretch. Wellman's pace was honest enough for 700m that no one went by, until Alaska's Pettigrew and Daniel Anderson kicked hard past the tiring Chico runner. Having a pretty average effort until the final 50m teammate Clinton Hayes caught a final gear and made a final dash to track down the pair up front. Hayes would come up short of the win, but did notch a solid 1:51.86 mark. Wellman followed closely at 1:51.96 and Robinson and Nelson gave the ‘Cats five under 1:52.80 for the day! For Robinson it was a sweet PR, but for Nelson who had run 1:51.97 two years ago, it was a bitter end to the season as he needed a sub 1:52 to get into the NCAA meet most likely. It's hard to put a negative twist on 4 guys from the same team all running between 1:51.8 and 1:52.8 but this was the type of day that it was. . . Expectations were exceedingly high. Wickman, Wellman and Hayes are all IN for NCAA's 800m so hopefully we can score some spots in the final with this talented trio.

All Time CSUC Implications:
As mentioned previously Kara moves into elite territory on our annual 5k list. Only Katie Lee and Jen James lie ahead of her on the CSUC Top-10 list and these two former ‘Cats combined for 12 All American certificates between them. A great day for Kara to say the least. Her 17:00 is also an Automatic NCAA qualifying mark. Hard to imagine that driving to LA the day before the final date to qualify for NCAA's, Kara lacked a mark that would make the meet. Now she had two of them!
Women's 5,000m:
Kara's last 5k where she was hoping for an NCAA mark was run at Mt Sac. In that race she failed to make a few moves early in the race that would have put her with the pack that ended up running in the desired low 17's. Conditions at Mt Sac were also quite hot and windy, which made her attempt even more difficult. At Oxy Kara had perfect conditions and a field of women who had seed times between 17:00 and 18:00. Not knowing how she would rebound from the 1500m PR several hours before Kara prepared for the 82-83 second laps that it would take to gain the 17:10 mark that it would probably take to get to the NCAA meet. Kara's race from the gun was like poetry in motion. Running through 800m on pace but in about 15th position Kara slowly worked up through the field, carefully measuring her effort and moving past tiring runners that started to peel away from a main chase pack. Up front 2:31 marathon star Desiere Davilla who was obviously working on sharpening her marathon speed, ran solo at just above 5 minute per mile pace. A pack of 2-3 followed well behind Davila running closer to 5:20 pace through 1600m. Kara ran through 1600m on the tail end of a strong pack hitting the metric mile at 5:29 and looking full of run. During the next 1600m Kara continued to clip off 82-83 second laps and moving around tiring runners who fell from the pack. Kara hit 3k in 10:18, and 3200m in 11:00 (a PR!) and now appeared completely capable and ready to run well under her 17:23 PR coming into the race. During the third mile, the pack continued to dissolve but Kara hung tough and looked prepared to handle whatever surges might be thrown at her. With 600m remaining the chase pack that Kara ran among was pared down to 3 and they had successfully caught and passed all of those who had gone out too quickly between them and Davila and now Kara ran in 3rd place overall behind former UCSB standout Bethany Nickless (sub 10:20 steepler I believe). From the 4k mark Kara split an 80 second lap (fastest lap yet) and now she had 600m separating herself from an awesome finish time. I'm unsure of what the next lap was exactly as I hit the split button with 400m remaining to see what she would need to possibly break 17 minutes (73 seconds) and also to see just how fast she would end up closing. In the next 200m Nickless seemed to stretch Lubieniecki putting a few meters on the tired sophomore, but with 200m remaining Kara found enough energy to move back to Nickless' heels and with 70meters to go Kara hit a gear that Nickless couldn't respond to. Kara raced to the line and stopped the clock at 16:59.9 on my watch. As is usually the case the Fully Automatic Timing adds the fraction of the second more that put her above 17:00, but F.A.T. only delays what will eventually be a 16-something PR for Lubieniecki. Detailing Kara's finish this week and how she “found a gear” that the others didn't have reverses the tables for the soph who lost two CCAA titles a week ago to big kickers. It was nice to see Kara win one of these battles as she has great closing speed of her own. Her final lap of 73 certainly shows this!

Men's 5,000m: Heat I
The ‘Cats had 4 athletes entered in heat I of the Men's 5k, including red shirting frosh Anthony Solis. Sophomore Tim Cannon knew that his 14:35 NCAA provisional mark would probably leave him short of qualifying for the championships so he eyed a 14:20's mark that would hopefully help his chances of qualifying. Red shirting frosh Anthony Solis had run a 14:53 5k at the Chico Twilight some 3-4 weeks previous, but has looked great in workouts since. RS Frosh Josh Linen carried a 14:57 PR to the line with hopes of finishing under 14:50 and fellow RS Frosh Joey Kochlacs entertained the thought of breaking 15:00 if all went well (15:10 PR). It's a rare occasion when each race inside the race goes above the plan, but this was one of those meets and evenings for our group. Tim Cannon got out to an aggressive start hitting 68, 68, 68, 69 for the first 4 laps, putting him at 4:35 at 1600m. The next 1600m the pace slowed a bit but that was fine given that the initial pace was a bit quicker than planned. Cannon settled to 69's for most of the second 1600m hitting 3200m very close to his PR (9:12 split). After Tim's Mt Sac 5k effort in the heat I remember noting in my summary of his race that he was one to watch, because he's a very savvy racer. During the final mile of the Oxy 5k Tim displayed this savvy as he kept pressing the pace hard, trying to keep himself under 70's each lap. From 600m out, Tim ran an impressive 65 second lap, and followed that up with a nice :31 second final 200m. His even splits and hard nosed running moved him up very well during the race and his final kick carried him to a nice 3rd place finish. Of course Fully Auto Timing would take another toll on this day as most had Tim clocked with a high 14:19 run, but after the adjustment he still managed a 14:20.03 time.

Not to be lost in the excitement of what was a great race was the pursuit of PR's by Solis, Linen and Kochlacs. Solis a true frosh from Barstow, CA put himself out aggressively on the heels of Cannon during the initial 3-4 laps. The quick early pace started to show and Anthony slowly peeled off Tim's pace and closer to his teammates behind. Anthony was passed by several athletes in the second mile before he seemed to engage once again in the final 3-4 laps, rallying well and re-passing a few who had gone by him earlier. The result of the nice recovery for Solis was a very nice 14:40 Pr! This time lowers his Junior USATF Championship qualifying mark and makes him the fastest true frosh in Wildcat history over the 12.5 lap distance.

Not far behind Solis much of the race were teammates Linen and Kochlacs who got out quickly within a large group of athletes, and held on well. Linen and Kochlacs hit 3200m at around 9:22 and 9:25 with each racing hard with the packs around them. Solid final laps ensured great PR's for each giving the ‘Cats quartet a 4-4 record for PR's in this race. Perhaps as surprising as anything was the size of the improvements for the guys. Cannon (15 seconds), Solis (13 seconds), Linen (12 seconds), and Kochlacs (22 seconds). A great evening of 5k'ing so far. (Note: Meet officials had a hard time finding many athletes who had actually finished the race and listed them as SCR below. Josh Linen was one of these athletes but numerous people there had him finishing at 14:45. For the purpose of this newsletter I've plugged him in the results where we think he finished with an approximate final time. It's unfortunate that the times aren't known yet as Josh's time was VERY close to the 14:45.00 provisional NCAA qualifying mark.

Men's 5,000m Heat II:
Two Chico runners would compete in the final 5k of the evening, RS frosh Miles Dunbar of Kodiak, Alaska, and true frosh red shirt Donald Truesdall of Wilsonville, NY. Dunbar was the top seed on paper coming into the race, having run 15:22 earlier in the season, and hoping to run in the 15:10-:15 range. Truesdall who dealt with injuries most of the winter and has missed a good amount of training, was hoping to improve on his 15:55 run 3-4 weeks ago. Miles who's brother enjoyed an amazing 8:51 3200m back at home in Kodiak the evening previous (becoming the first Alaskan HS runner to break 9 minutes in AK) was set to run a big PR himself. Miles put himself among the leaders coming through 1600 and 2k in 4:51 and 6:04. By the half-way point the lead pack had dwindled to just 3-4 with Miles trailing UCSD's Gabe LaMothe who was doing his best to keep the pace close to 15 minute rhythm. By 3200m (9:44) Miles was alone at the front with LaMothe and the pace was slowing to 74's and 75's. Knowing a fast time wouldn't come unless he forced the issue Dunbar took the leading duties and LaMothe followed. The pace remained a bit slower than they'd hoped, but each was very tired and unable to ratchet it down any more than it already was. The constant and strong tempo took it's toll on the UCSD runner and over the final 600m Dunbar crafted a lead that wouldn't be cracked by anyone on this evening. Finishing with a solid 69 second revolution Miles hit a nice 15:19 PR for the win. Truesdall seemed a bit tired from the return to training and struggled to a 16:04 finish. Unfortunately Donald was also a victim of some poor timing as the finish crew missed he and a good number of others who finished both races.
Up Next for the ‘Cats will be the NCAA Championships next weekend (Thurs-Saturday) in San Angelo, Texas. Given that Saturday evening was the final day to collect qualifying times the final list of declared athletes has been posted online and it appears that no less than 4 distance women and 8 distance men will make the trip to Texas. Although the final accepted entries list isn't up yet athlete who are currently ranked in the Top 16 in the final declaration list (found on: www.flashresults.com/flashwest) are in the meet. Here is a list of qualifiers (for sure) and what they will run:
