CIF Track & Field Championships
Cerritos College, Norwalk - Prelims Friday June 2, 2000

A great first day at the California State Meet. A lot of chills and thrills, with the qualifying
process whittling the fields down to nine qualifiers.

Some great match-ups were set up for Saturday, with National Record holders Monique
Henderson and Angel Perkins looking strong, and Alejandra Barrientos (San Lorenzo Valley,
Felton) dropping out of her 1600 heat due to a pinched nerve in her knee. Albert Hollis (Christian
Brothers, Sacramento) raced away from Southern Cal star Bennie Robinson in his 100 heat, with
a strong effort also over the 200 meter distance.

Qualifiers are listed below, with some super finals set up when the fields come together.
The weather was warm in the afternoon, with hopes that the heat will hold through the early
evening tomorrow for what will be a great affair!

Girls 400 Meter Relay
Heat #1

First contest for the team race here had Aisha Margain of Berkeley charge the
backstretch leg, putting her squad well into the lead, with the Yellowjackets taking a good final
pass to a big win at 46.90.

Heat #2

James Logan in the middle of the track was out quickly, along with Morningside in Lane
3, with both in red uniforms. Logan stretched the hand-offs out, racing to a fine 46.66 winning
clocking, slightly ahead of Berkeley from Heat #1

Heat #3

Wilson and Dorsey moved down the backstretch, with good handoffs all the way around.
The race calmly moved into the anchor leg, where Monique Henderson rocketed the homestretch
out of lane 3 to take her squad to the win and a huge seasonal best of 46.80 (Henderson did not
run for the team last week in the section meet, where they were 48.34). This event became very,
very interesting off the heat running. Three freshmen and a junior on the Morse team. From 48.34
to equal #18 nationally Morse made an interesting improvement. Coach MacDonald had the
troops up!!!

Boys 400 Relay

Heat #1
University City (SD) was out quick, with Robert Nembhard of Pasadena blowing the
backstretch to put the red-clad Pasadena team in the lead. University City had a strong third leg
and great anchor by Lamont Long to record a fine 41.29 win.

Heat #2
Serra, in red in the middle of the track was out quickly, with Warren Rogers of Serra flying
the backstretch after bumping with the Clovis West second runner at the exchange. Clovis West
never made the exchange, a shame for the 41.41 team from the Central Section. Serra flew away
to a 41.22 win.

Heat #3
Cleveland (Reseda) was doing great until going into the anchor leg, where a poor hand-
off brought them back to the pack. It was the best race thus far in the meet after that, as five
teams across the track battled with Cleveland coming back for the win at 41.79.

Girls 1600 Meter Heat #1
Big news here was Alejandra Barrientos (San Lornezo Valley) probably the nation's top
miler, dropping out at 500 meters into the event. She was one of the leaders through a leisurely
72.9 400, with the pack jogging along through 2:35.8 and 3:52.6 splits, with Amber Steen
handling most of the pace work. A big final 400 had it come down to three down the homestretch (Jenny Aldridge,
Amber Steen, and Cosette Smith) with Aldridge winning at 5:01.10 It turned out that Barrientos has had a pinched
nerve in her knee for a few days and it bothered her. Word was that she will not be running Saturday, costing
fans some super contests!!

Girls 1600 Heat #2
A big quicker pace here. 73.6 for the opening 400, but 2:31.5 for the 800, with Bridget
Duffy and Lynn Dixon leading into the 1200 at 3:47.8. Over the last lap sprint it was Dixon who
took off, with the green clad frosh racing a last 400 just over 70 for the win. The race had taken a
whole new atmosphere with Barrientos' difficulties the first heat. Barrientos had her right leg
wrapped from the knee down to the ankle by trainers and was driven from the track on a cart.

Boys 1600 Heat #1
Erik Webb (North Bakersfield) led through the first 400 at 62.8, with the pace slowing to
2:10.1 at the 800, with Ryan Bousquet leading there. At 3:14.2 it was Chris Lanese of Moreau in
Hayward who had moved out in front, with Bousquet closing the final 400 in 60.5 to win, but he
was disqualified. There was a point in the race with some jostling and it appeared that was the
problem.

Boys 1600 Heat #2
Evan Fox of West Hills led through the 400 at 63.2, with the pack in close attendance.
After a 2:10.4 800 Fox picked the pace up, with five in attendance, led by Nick Branen at 3:13.5
for the 1200. With 200 to go Sergio Campos moved up and it was kind of off to the races. Over
the final 100 Fox, Ben Aragon of West Hills, and Campos tretched across the track as a
threesome, Campos winning with a final 200 of under 29.5.

Girls 100 Meter Hurdles Heat #1
Nichole Denby of North (Riverside), who had won the Southern Section run-off earlier in
the afternoon in 13.39w (+2.6) rocketed away early here to a solid 13.40 win (wind +2.5). Some of
the North points looked very, very solid at this point of the meet.

Girls 100 Hurdles Heat #2
The wind was –1.4 (boy, I hope not one of those weekends!!! With in heat 1 and against
in heat 2). Blue-clad Tamara Gulley of the CCS in the middle of the track surged ahead to win at
14.40. Gulley had run in the 13.70's a couple of times this year, but did not look that sharp here.

Girls 100 Hurdles Heat #3
Lashinda Demus in the middle of the track in the maroon Wilson uniform raced away to
the 14.14 win with the win –2.1 mps. Sani Roseby was next at 14.38.

Girls 400 Meters Heat #1
Monique Henderson (Morse) continued to look "super-sharp." She took it out, 25.0 for the
first 200, then cruised powerfully, finishing at 52.98, letting people know she came ready for "all-
comers." We would have to think this is the fastest heat ever in a State Meet by anyone anywhere
in the history of high school track!

Girls 400 Meters Heat #2
Angel Perkins, the second national federation record holder in the 400 this year, from
Gahr HS in Cerritos, lined up here. Moving quickly up to the finish frosh from Logan in Union City
on her outside in lane 6, Angel was just under 26 at the 200 on the way to a comfortable 54.53
win. Everyone awaited the big match-up in the finals in this event between Henderson and
Perkins, the super underclass duo!

Girls 400 Meters Heat #3
Maggie Vessey (Soquel) and Nicole Gaskins (Diamond Bar) moved down the
backstretch, with frosh Ashlee Brown (North, Riverside) also strong on the outside in lane 6.
Down the homestretch it was Vessey with a determined move, with only the winners assured a
spot in the Finals, with the tall blond Central Coast star moving to a win at a fine 54.75.

Girls 100 Meters Heat #1
Porchea Carroll (Rio Mesa) was out very quickly, with Sani Roseby (Monterey), making
her usual "end of season charge" moving up, but the latest Rio Mesa star from Coach Brian
Fitzgerald held on for the 11.86 win narrowly. The wind –0.5

Girls 100 Meters Heat #2
Nichole Denby was off to the races here for North (Riverside), with Aisha Margain
(Berkeley) way behind at 30 meters (having given up 2 and a half meters to that point). The Red-
clad Margain came back to lose by less than a meter 11.83-11.89 to Denby.

TC note - Northern section champ Kelli Enos, in finishing last in second heat, must have come up
lame which explains why would scratch in the 200m prelims.

Girls 100 Meters Heat #3
Sierra Hauser-Price was out well here, with Alexis Weatherspoon, bothered at the end of
her sprint races last week by a hamstring, looking full of run this go-round, moving ahead to a
11.87 win.

Girls 200 Meters Heat #1
Sani Roseby, one of the bombers from last year's great state meet sprinting at
Sacramento, was out here, with Aisha Margain of Berkeley purring down the homestretch in her
very powerful style, moving to a 23.63 win that showed she will be tough late in the meet
tomorrow with the team title on the line.

Girls 200 Meters Heat #2
Monique's turn here, with the Henderson from Morse cranking the turn and blazing away
from the good field, leaving one to believe she will be tough to beat in either the 400 or the 200
this weekend. Her 23.32 is the Nation's leading time for the year!!! The run was not all-out!!!

Girls 200 Heat #3
Great race!!!! Angel Perkins of Gahr blazed the turn, with Tracee Thomas of North,
Riverside hanging in there on her inside. Perkins and Thomas ran stride for stride down the
stretch, with Perkins edging in ahead of the North soph, who ran her best time of the year in
second, 23.70-23.76.
