CIF Track & Field Championships Cerritos College, Norwalk - Prelims Friday June 2, 2000 A great first day at the California State Meet. A lot of chills and thrills, with the qualifying process whittling the fields down to nine qualifiers. Some great match-ups were set up for Saturday, with National Record holders Monique Henderson and Angel Perkins looking strong, and Alejandra Barrientos (San Lorenzo Valley, Felton) dropping out of her 1600 heat due to a pinched nerve in her knee. Albert Hollis (Christian Brothers, Sacramento) raced away from Southern Cal star Bennie Robinson in his 100 heat, with a strong effort also over the 200 meter distance. Qualifiers are listed below, with some super finals set up when the fields come together. The weather was warm in the afternoon, with hopes that the heat will hold through the early evening tomorrow for what will be a great affair! Girls 400 Meter Relay Heat #1 First contest for the team race here had Aisha Margain of Berkeley charge the backstretch leg, putting her squad well into the lead, with the Yellowjackets taking a good final pass to a big win at 46.90. Heat #2 James Logan in the middle of the track was out quickly, along with Morningside in Lane 3, with both in red uniforms. Logan stretched the hand-offs out, racing to a fine 46.66 winning clocking, slightly ahead of Berkeley from Heat #1 Heat #3 Wilson and Dorsey moved down the backstretch, with good handoffs all the way around. The race calmly moved into the anchor leg, where Monique Henderson rocketed the homestretch out of lane 3 to take her squad to the win and a huge seasonal best of 46.80 (Henderson did not run for the team last week in the section meet, where they were 48.34). This event became very, very interesting off the heat running. Three freshmen and a junior on the Morse team. From 48.34 to equal #18 nationally Morse made an interesting improvement. Coach MacDonald had the troops up!!! University City had a strong third leg and great anchor by Lamont Long to record a fine 41.29 win. Heat #2 Serra, in red in the middle of the track was out quickly, with Warren Rogers of Serra flying the backstretch after bumping with the Clovis West second runner at the exchange. Clovis West never made the exchange, a shame for the 41.41 team from the Central Section. Serra flew away to a 41.22 win. Heat #3 Cleveland (Reseda) was doing great until going into the anchor leg, where a poor hand- off brought them back to the pack. It was the best race thus far in the meet after that, as five teams across the track battled with Cleveland coming back for the win at 41.79. She was one of the leaders through a leisurely 72.9 400, with the pack jogging along through 2:35.8 and 3:52.6 splits, with Amber Steen handling most of the pace work. A big final 400 had it come down to three down the homestretch (Jenny Aldridge, Amber Steen, and Cosette Smith) with Aldridge winning at 5:01.10 It turned out that Barrientos has had a pinched nerve in her knee for a few days and it bothered her. Word was that she will not be running Saturday, costing fans some super contests!! Girls 1600 Heat #2 A big quicker pace here. 73.6 for the opening 400, but 2:31.5 for the 800, with Bridget Duffy and Lynn Dixon leading into the 1200 at 3:47.8. Over the last lap sprint it was Dixon who took off, with the green clad frosh racing a last 400 just over 70 for the win. The race had taken a whole new atmosphere with Barrientos' difficulties the first heat. Barrientos had her right leg wrapped from the knee down to the ankle by trainers and was driven from the track on a cart. There was a point in the race with some jostling and it appeared that was the problem. Boys 1600 Heat #2 Evan Fox of West Hills led through the 400 at 63.2, with the pack in close attendance. After a 2:10.4 800 Fox picked the pace up, with five in attendance, led by Nick Branen at 3:13.5 for the 1200. With 200 to go Sergio Campos moved up and it was kind of off to the races.
