However the gap becomes razor thin over Enterprise freshman Lindsey Kirschman heading into the final turn. The rest of the field was totally over matched and is never a factor in the race. Kirschman powers past Wood rounding the last turn and pulls away over the final 100m to win by a huge three second margin. A pooped Wood manages to hold off a fast closing Tiffany Harrison of Enterprise to take second. As expected, Chico’s Kayla Silva and Lindsey Kirschman of Enterprise charge out hard with the Chico athlete setting the early pace. Yreka’s Lauren Quinn, last year’s winner of this race, lags behind in third while the rest of the field strains to stay close to her. Silva and Kirschman pull away from the field early in the final circuit with Silva still trying to separate herself from her younger (and supposedly less fresh competitor) as they move quickly down the back stretch. However Kirschman, unleashing a devastating kick, accelerates past Silva rounding the final turn and pulls away for surprisingly easy second victory of the day. Amazing when you consider that the margin of victory in their two previous meetings (one each) were decided by less than a second and the fact that her winning 400m performance was only twenty minutes earlier. Quinn finishes a distant third. Quinn tries to stay close in lap two as Hoppe maintains her lead. Menard , sensing the pace is too quick, lets them go. The third circuit finds Quinn paying for her early race decisions as a reinvigorated Menard passes her. Meanwhile Hoppe continues to enlarge her lead over her nearest rivals. Hoppe’s pace slows going back the backstretch the final time, allowing an accelerating Menard to begin to reel her teammate in. Meanwhile Quinn is toast and falls completely out of contention. Hoppe slows to a crawl as she moves down the final straight away. When she mounts no challenge, Hoppe is easily passed by her hard charging teammate about 30m from the finish, to hand Menard the victory. Well back, and never in contention Paradise’s Lindsay Roberts, nearly catches a lumbering Quinn at the tape but has to be content with fourth. Natalie Collins from Corning drops first , followed by Paradise’s Camie Manwill and finally Julie Shaw of Anderson as the lead pack’s pace proves too daunting. Pleasant Valley’s Katie Moravec, now followed closely by Robberson and Enterprise junior Janessa Hoppe, takes over the lead during the third circuit as a quick opening lap was following by a much more pedantic one. Robberson retakes the lead on lap four, though Hoppe and Moravec remain close. No change in position occurs in lap 5 but a gap develops during lap 6 as Moravec is unable to stay with the leaders. Hoppe remains content to let Robberson lead until final lap where she finally takes control by pressing the pace down the backstretch. She opens up a decent lead by the time she comes off the last turn, however a late fade allows Robberson to nearly steal the race as the Yreka phenom, noticing a slowing of her competitor’s gait, charges hard to the “finish” line. Moravec, finishing well back, is not pressed for third. Shaw, running a steady race, takes fourth with Manwill further back grabbing the final medal with a seasonal best. The race for second was more in doubt. A four way battle between Chico’s Russell Carroll, PV’s Nathan Ogden , Modoc’s Scott Joyce and CV’s Robert Edsall developed after a couple laps of trading places. Edsall did most of the pace work laps 3-5 with Ogden generally close behind while Joyce, and especially, Carroll content to let others lead. Ogden took over pacing duties during laps 6-7 with Carroll and Edsall remaining close while Joyce fades heading into the final lap. A quick burst puts Carroll even with Ogden while putting some daylight between him and Edsall. Carroll rushes by Ogden to build a solid lead going down the backstretch and holds it through the final 200m to take second. Ogden maintains his gap over Edsall for third. Kenny Frank (Enterprise) duels Brandon Delgado (Paradise) stride for stride down the back stretch before passing the 100/200 specialist on the outside rounding the final turn. Frank makes a 49 look easy as he cruises to a wide margin of victory. Delgado, looking as if he’s carrying a whole circus on his back coming down the home stretch, is nearly caught by a hard charging LP team.
