In the Finals it was veteran Desean Cunningham (Uni City) on the outside leading at the 100m at 11.6, with Deun White (lane 2) (Helix) ahead at 200m 22.4. At the 300 it was John Walters (Newark) who had moved up to lead at 34.5 with 3 to 4 very close behind as they entered the straightaway. However, from back about sixth place with 80 meters to go here was Gettis again, with momentum that took him up and eventually past everyone to a win at 47.41 - amazing!!! It turns out that he has run no track before this year with his first official HS meet a mid-April relay leg at the Arcadia Invitational. Amazing!!! Youngsters rule - Shuler frosh winner, Craddock soph High Hurdles, now Gettis takes the 400! Gettis 47.41 - Cunningham 47.50 - Myles 47.81 - Walters 48.11 - Deun White 48.32 Gettis not yet 16 years old!!! Girls 100 Meters - Probably Allyson's best recent start as she was out with Shalonda Solomon. Between 40 and 60 meters Felix edged slightly away to a super 11.29 win (+1.4 mps wind) - wind legal all-time best for Allyson (=7th US Performer at the High School level). Only behind Angela Williams, Marion Jones, and Angela Burnham (in the Flo-Jo 10.49 Olympic Trials WR a few years back) in State all-time annals. Felix 11.29 - Solomon 11.48 - Rodriguez (Western) 11.66 - Olear (Louisville, the nation's top frosh sprinter) 11.77 - Shana Woods 11.82 Boys 100m - Derrrell Hutsona (Helix) seemed to coil for super start in the middle of the track. He was out nicely, with Ronnie Drummer next to him. The pack swallowed Hutsona up between 50 and 80 meters, but on the inside in lane one in yellow it was Chris Henry (Edison, Stockton) who raced an amazing final 40 meters to win in 10.56 - wind legal 0.5. Henry 10.56 - Matt Slater 10.66 - O'Neal 10.67 - Drummer 10.70 - Hutsona 10.75 - the sense of "who slows the least" near the end of a 100m was seemingly defied by the strong Henry here as he showed impressive power and determination over the final 30-40 meters for the win. Girls 800 - Ashley Freeman (Wilson) out quick - leading at first 200 under 30 , with no one challanging her through the 400 at 62, with the 600 at 1:34.9. Super gutty race with no one ever coming really close through a mid 2:08 win!! Freeman 2:08.86 - Kelly McCann 2:10.80 - McKinney (LB Poly) 2:11.27 - McPherson 2:11.34 - Kirschman 2:11.82 (frosh from Enterprise of Redding - wow!) - Alysia Johnson 2:12.27. Score here LB Poly 42 - North 32 - Boys 800 - Quick early pace - Haddan with Solomon on his shoulder at 25.2. 52.6 with Solomon leading at the 400, Cobian and Haddan closest - 1:21.7 at the 600, with Andrew Dawson close and challenging as they entered the straightaway--Solmon cranked the final 200, finished under 1:50 to win fairly easily, but some good depth! 1:49.79 official. Solomon 1:49.79 - Cobian 1:51.14 - Haddan 1:51.79 - Rodie 1:51.94 - Dawson 1:52.25 - Frank 1:52.54 Girls 300 Hurdles - Great race! Ashlee Brown out super but hesitated at hurdle one. Mackenzie Hill definite leader at the 100m point (12.9), but Ashley Lodree really wanted a state title and she moved ahead at the 200 at 26.2. She looked off to the races, but Mackenzie Hill gathered well, and over the final two hurdles, moved up and past for the win. Interesting yellow flag between hurdle 2 and 3 so we shall see! 41.31 clocking for Hill it looked like. - Hill 41.31 - Lodree 41.54 - Calhoun (North) 42.30 - Eryn Mack 42.89 - Gooden (Wilson) 43.43 - Team Points - Poly 42 - North 38 - Wilson 34. Boys 300M IH - Thomas Mack false started out - he was limping before the race, will be interesting to see if he shows for the 4x400 final (later reported pretty good heel bruise - he did look good in the 1600 relay - the honest effort rule puts folks in some interesting situations). Brandon Bornes (Rancho Buena Vista, Vista) was out like a rocket, but he killed hurdle 2 and it did not slow him a bit! He was 12.0 at the 100, and continued to charge, with Stephan Brooks (Berkeley) on his outside shoulder up through the 200 (24.2). Down the stretch Bornes continued to roll and he clobbered the final hurdle on the way to a time in the low 38's. Bornes 38.00 - Brian Payne 38.09 - Stephan Brooks 38.20 - Bryon Barmer (Helix) 38.27 - Dayne Comrie 38.28. Footballer Bornes was the least affected hurdler we have ever seen by clobbering hurdles in a race!!! Girls 200 - Allyson Felix out with those outside of her (wind legal +0.8 quickly after), Shalonda Solomon and Jasmine Lee , with an amazingly powerful move with 150 to go off the turn. The impressive LA Baptist senior rocketed away to a 22.52 National Federation Record, taking down Marion Jones' 22.67 from 1992. She took a great victory lap after!! 23.37 Solomon - 23.71 Olear - 23.84 Jolanda Diego (El Camino, Oceanside) - 23.97 Jasmine Lee LB Poly - Allyson's move against some of the nation's best at 50m really showed the truly amazing power she has!!! Boys 200m - Lionel Larry (Dominguez) came to roll, charging out in the middle of the track , rocketing past 100 winner outside of him, Chris Henry, early on and racing away. Larry had a couple of meters coming into the straightaway, with Ronnie Drummer (North Salinas) also running strong. Larry, running for the team title possibly, raced hard into the tape, racing 20.97 with the wind +0.6. Drummer 21.16 - Deun White 21.36 - Slater 21.39 - Girls 3200 - 35.0 opening 200 - 73.8 for Emmaline Hartel (Birmingham) early leader with Rachel Bryan next - Rachel took the lead up the 600 with Claire Rethmeier moving up to second at 1:54.3 (40.6 3rd 200 basic 10:40 pace) - 2:34.7 at the 800 Bryan-Rethmeier about 5m ahead of the pack. Bryan 5:16.3 at the 1600 with Rethmeier joining her as they edged away from the pack. Ruth Graham, Phyllis Blanchard and Shelly Leland next group of three. 6:37.1 at five laps, with Rethmeier challenging at 2100 meters. Bryan responded and she and Rethmeier moved away. Rethmeier took the lead just as they passed 6 laps at 7:56.7. Rethmeier 9:14.5 with one to go, Bryan 9:18.5. Rethmeier a 10:27.32 winner looking strong! Ruiz - Trafeh - Leal, Nelson, at 5:37.8 for five (34.4 last 200). 2200 at 6:12.5 (35.0) - 6:47.1 with two to go Ruiz -Trafeh - Nelson - Leal - Jiminez - gap back to Alcorn - 7:21.9 (2600m 34.8 200) Nelson moves a bit with 600 to go and takes the lead in what appears to be a definite, pre-planned move! Tim 10 meter lead with 1 to go but Leal moving with Trafeh. 7:54.3 with 1 to go. Nelson 5 meters - Leal - 5 meters Trafeh - with 200 to go Alcorn was in 4th but had impressive momentum already - 3000m at 8:24.3 for Nelson - Alcorn was 8:27.4 and Kyle was rolling at an amazing pace - it appeared Nelson just held on by hundredths at 8:53.3 or so. Alcorn final 200 26.0!!! Amazing instant replay of last year - let's await the photo!!! Alcorn's final lap had to be well under 60!!! Tim Nelson 8:53.59 - Alcorn 8:53.66 - Leal 8:57.88 - Trafeh 9:00.22 - Austin Ramos 9:00.31 (another big last lap) - Ghebray 9:01.69 Girls 4x400 Relay - 3 turn stagger a bit tough to tell who is leading - Mackenzie Hill came out charging for Wilson 54.1 with Poly 55.6 and North 56.1. LB Poly way out in front after 3 legs - Reggie Bush got the baton way back for Helix, and moved into third with 150 to go, then he was passed by a number of teams during his 48.8 leg, with Carson edging by, but not enough places ahead of Helix's 8th to take the team title. Up front Derrick Jones anchored LB Poly to a 3:14.35 winner. Bakersfield 3:15.89 - University City 3:16.34 - Dominguez 3:16.39 Lionel Larry (47.7) - Serra 3:16.66 - Santa Margarita 3:17.80. Field Events Boys HJ - Cole Herron no misses in the event, won at 6-10, with Matthew Carter (El Modena), Josh Gibson (Canyon Springs), and Rudy Diez (Central, Fr) 6-08 next. Boys PV - interesting with the winds generally mild and with the vaulters. Matt Mosely (Buchanan) only able to get over 14-04 before going out at 14-08. Shuler looking good with a second clearance at 14-00, but first time clearances at 14-08, 15-00, and 15-04. Bockmiller was able to get over 15-04 and finished third there. Ryan McClain (Escondido) continued to amaze with 15-04 and 15-08 clearances. Steady as a rock Shuler a State Record 15-08 clearance on his first effort. With the bar at 16-00 Shuler and McClain settled the event. Shuler again sailed over on his first attempt once again, with McClain a super weekend, but settling for second at 15-08. Ryan set the bar at 16-04, a new National Frosh record and finally ran out of steam there - super day, wow, a frosh state champ and Golden State Grade Record!! Costa moved the bar to 13-05 and was impressive with a clearance on her second attempt. She tried a National Record 13-08.5, and was over on her third attempt, but tipped it on the way down.
