Pierce's pacing draws along Teesdale, Crowl and, to a lesser extent, Nicoara. A nice surge gives Martinez the lead early in the final lap which he opens up to a several meter advantage with 25m to go. However decelerating to a jog, Martinez points to the sky as he crosses the line, apparently more content to showboat than worry about losing to a fast closing and never quitting Pierce. Fritzke is dropped in lap six but Fairley remains close, moving up to Ogden's shoulder at the beginning of the final lap.
