Enterprises' Frescas is also in the lead pack at the bell but is quickly dispatched in lap two as a surge by Bower is sufficiently hard to open a gap between her and Kirschman going down the back stretch. This gap is fleeting as an accelerating Kirschman takes the lead going around the final turn and never looks back. Bower struggles badly coming down the home stretch but still takes second easily. The Mt. Shasta freshman's lead remains small through 1200m but a surprising strong final circuit strings out her competition to give her an easy victory. Shaw, despite running with a stress facture in her foot, takes second with Hickman holding off Atkins for third. An uninspired Kirschman takes fifth, passing a sleep deprived (senior party night before) Harris along the way. STATE: Natalie Sojka 5:17.12 23/29 overall State Champion: Annie St. Geme/Corona Del Mar 4:50.40 (73-77-72-68) St. Geme leads the entire way, takes off with 600m to go. Only Kosinski (2nd/4:54.68), Follmar (4th/4:55.64) attempt to hang on however after 300m both begin to fade. A hard charging Tarver (3rd/4:55.21) with no chance to win does manage to catch Follmar with about 10m to go. Dillard, Barber and Riley tuck in behind the two leaders. The lead pack becomes more strung out as first Riley, then Barber and to a lesser degree Dillard fade. Hodgkinson, who missed most of the track season due to PE field hockey injury, takes the lead late in lap three and opens a small gap on Fritzke at the halfway point. Dillard, though still losing ground to her hometown rival, closes on then passes Fritzke, who wilts badly in the heat. The final 800 Dillard holds her own but unlike the two previous weeks does not overtake Hodgekinson who wins comfortably in a seasonal PR. STATE: Hannah Hodgkinson 11:24.66 21/31, including 1 DNF (78-85-86-87-89-89-89-81) State Champion: Tori Tyler/Gunn 10:38.90 (76-77-80-81-79-82-84-80) Tyler takes control by 800m and leads comfortably until a weak lap seven allows her to be caught by Amanda Moreno and Lauren Saylor at the bell. Tyler still leads when passed with 300m by Moreno, however Saylor surges ahead going around the final turn. She pulls Tyler along, who off the turn retakes the lead and holds on for the victory over a closing by never quite catching Moreno while Saylor fades to 3rd. Hannah runs steady, holding 25th place at the midway point then picks off 4 more competitors over the final four circuits to finish in 21st position at the end. Fairley, the only competitor doing the 1600-3200 double, stays in contention through the mile but does a slow fade in the faster second half of the race. Handa persistent surging in the second half of the race are to no avail as Silva matches each one.
