With not even enough time for her to get her award from the 400, Atkins instead has
to get ready to race again. For the third week in a row, she is joined by EAL rivals Erynn
Rebol and Sarah Brandt. Like last week at Division 1 Championships, Brandt takes point at
the gun but Rebol, sensing her pace waning, takes over rounding the second turn. Atkins is
happy to let others set the pace and hangs back. Rebol leads halfway with Brandt in second
and Atkins a more distant third, nearly three seconds back. Atkins passes Brandt rounding
the third turn as her tempo quickens. The gap to Rebol, with 300 to go is not quite as
large as the week before, still it takes until about 40 meters to go before blowing by
Rebol and completing a section double only once before accomplished by a freshman. Lindsey
Kirschman/Enterprise did it in 2003 (58.58/2:17.76).

Easily the most dramatic finish of the meet. Williams and Emmons have great starts,
while Dumore struggles with his rhythum and trails badly heading into the turn. Dumore
regoups rounding the turn to put himself back into contention. Williams, leading almost the
entire race, slows over the final hurdles the price of his aggressive start. Dumore crashes
through the final hurdle but still has enough momentum to pass the tiring Williams and
avoid being caught by Emmons' dive across the finish line. The top four finishers all
improve upon their seasonal bests, Emmons & Boyd by a little more than half a second.

What on paper appeared would be a close race never was. Strong legs by all four
West Valley girls (even a less than healthy Michelle Johnson) never gave any other
team hope of getting back in the race.

Of the top teams expected to compete for the section title, only Paradise failed to
run a season best. Chico was only in the race because Pleasant Valley scratched. Six teams
were still in contention after two legs but only two had a realistic shot at winning with a
lap to go. West Valley anchor Joel Dumore closes on James Williams but is unable to pass the
Hornet junior as Enterprise finishes with the win and a surprisingly fast time.
