WEST VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
Results & Commentary
Weather: Sunny outside of some thundershower blow off from the coastal mountains.
Temperatures start out in the upper 80s but cool off into the middle 70s by meet's
end. South winds 5-15 mph for field events but winds not much of a factor for
running events.

No scratches. No matter how good a runner you are, racing the 400/100 back to back is
never a good idea. So it was no surprise to seasoned track fans for Evanoff, after a
comfortable win in the 400, to come out totally flat in the 100. She's left in the blocks
at the start and then runs a solid but hardly spectacular race. Out front Munuz graps the
lead early and holds on well to claim the victory. Abrams closes strong to edge Hood and
Nelson & take second.

Schell scratches, replaced by Lange. A fresh Flagg (she stratched in the 400) aggressive start gives
her the early lead. Only Hinkle, Lewis and Pruett make any attempt to stay close. Hinkle stays within
striking distance down the back stetch the final time, but then Flagg's fresher legs proves too much and
the gap widens down home stretch. Sophomore Lewis, best of the rest in recovering from the brutal opening
lap, closes well enough to take third.

Lewis, Storms & Gutermuth scratch, replaced by Day & Perkins. Moran takes point with
only Hinkle and Davis willing to stay close. A lap later, Davis falls out the back. Moran
still leads in lap three but Hinkle moves up on her shoulder coming down the home stretch
the penultimate time. At the bell, Hinkle surges to the lead. Moran manages to stay reasonably
close until the final turn but by then the WV senior closing pace proves too overwhelming and
the gap widens over the remaining 200 meters.

Davis scratches, replaced by Jackson. Another epic battle. Strong pacework by Storms with
Moran, Gutermuth & Mino Faukner tucking in behind. The rest of the field strings out pretty
quickly. Only Lewis makes any attempt to stay reasonably close. NO change in the lead pack
until lap five when Mino Faukner begins losing contact. A surge by Storms temporarily stretches
out the lead pack in lap 7 but they're back to together at the start of the final lap. However
the effort tires Gutermuth & she fades from contention rounding the penultimate turn. Another surge
is initiated by Storm as the two remaining contenders move down the back stretch. Moran is more
than up to the test and pulls even with Storms with a little less than 60m to go. A battle of
wills the rest of the way as mini surges by one than the other give only momentary advantage as
the section rivals go shoulder to shoulder through the finish line. Another photo finish that after
what must have been an unbearable delay, the state berth was decided by a mear .02 of second!

Turner strong start almost makes up the stagger on Freitas just before reaching the turn.
However coming off the turn, Freitas's deficit is down to a stride with Ross closing as well.
The race is even between Turner, Freitas with a hurdle to go. Photo finish shows the West
Valley senior has come away with her first section title and section record to boot. In third.
Ross comes away with what was Turner's best mark before this race. Easily the fastest 300H in

Red Bluff defeats West Valley at SRL & Division I championships after losing to the
Eagles badly at West Valley invitational (by replacing Allison Winning with Kaylynn Gibson).
West Valley counters by replacing Jenna Storms with Samantha Chaney. Brose runs a powerful
opening leg to give Red Bluff the lead. The lead enlarges slightly in leg 2, but leg 3
Flagg powers by the Spartans with 59 second leg. Hinkston retakes the lead in leg 4 surging by
Freitas down the backstretch but Freitas doesn't panic, rallies rounding the final turn and cruises by an
exhaused Hinkston to come home victorious. The second time on the day she has snatched victory out of
the jaws of defeat in a little over an hour, confirming her status as the female winner of the

her early season form, came up a little short during a heated competition with Red Bluff's

first of two on the day.

He too has a tardy start, runs an OK middle before fading at the end to also finish LAST. Out

Neill mounts a surge down the back stretch briefly taking the lead before he's passed by
Baldwin. The leaders stay close rounding the turn but Graber is unable to maintain contact
coming off the turn. What at 90m out looked like a tossup between Neill and Baldwin, is over

Harper, Bunn, Murch, Graber and Foreman scratch, replaced by Leedy, Griffith and Cramer. Morzenti
emerges from a tightly bunch pack to take control of the race rounding the second turn. Wollard, Hunt
and Schillen trail behind respectively. Morzenti's vigorous pace gives him a 10-15m lead at the bell.
He maintains this margin into the final turn then the wheels begin to fall off. Wollard seeing Morzenti's
stride shorten even more down the homestretch, pounces surging by an unresponsive Morzenti with less than
10m to spare. So close yet so far, the Mt Shasta sophomore learns the hard way about the metering of energy

Hunt, Bland scratch, replaced by Clements. Bunn, the section cross country champion, sets
the early pace with Trinity's Harper, Paradise's McGlone and UP's Younkers staying the
closest on the brisk 65 second opening lap. The pace becomes more reasonable laps 2 & 3
but still the field strings out badly with Harper, McGlone the only ones looking not too
stressed out by the pace. The tempo slows noticeably by the halfway mark as Bunn
appears to be having some fitness issues coming back from a mid season injury. Still Harper, McGlone
seem content to let the Yreka senior to stay on point. Coming down the home stretch for the penumlimate
time, the pace doddles too much for McGlone and he promtoely surges by Bunn and into the lead at the bell.
Bunn's game with the injection of pace and stays on McGlone's heals while Harper fades. Bunn
retakes the lead down the back stretch but the Paradise senior is not detered and stays close. A
surge off the turn by McGlone looks like it might work until Bunn comes up with enough of a gear
to hold his section rival off through the tape. Not by much but enough as McGlone, though breaking 10
minutes for the first time, was more than up to the task.

Another close competition. West Valley's Simmons gains the lead after his second
jump but needs a big jump in the fifth round to stay there and come away with his second
section title on the day.
STATE: Marcus Simmons fails to show up at state, reason unknown.
Needed to jump 46-08 to make finals
State Champion: Nate Moore, Castro Valley/nc 51-04

Although a foot and a half off his section leading best, Ventimiglia third best mark
of the season is enough to claim the section title as no. 2 putter Lowe cannot regain
his mid season form while third ranked putter Gunter, while the only other competitor
over 50 feet, isn't able to muster a toss to seriously test the Shasta senior.
STATE: Zane Ventimiglia fails to show up at state, reason unknown.
Needed a toss of 55-08.50 to make finals
