Rarely has anyone tripled at sections, especially not for someone with a legitimate chance to win any of the distant events. A fair amount have done a 1600-3200 double but nobody's willing to run another race in between which you have little chance of winning. However this year was different, no one in the section having a lock on any race and Koehnen was used to tripling although not on the section's biggest stage and not with so little time in between. Lewis sets the pace for a few laps, gives way to Wilson upon reaching the half way point all the while with Koehnen content just to stay close. Everyone knows what going to happen, no mystery here but with Wilson not having much history running the eight lap race doesn't really ratchet the pace down much. A penultimate lap 83 does stretch out the field, but this proves to be too little too late as Koehnen runs her final lap faster than anybody else does in any distance race (except her). Harper should have won in a cake walk but that's why they run the races. A pedestrian 800 drops nobody, Emanuel strings out the pack in lap 3 and Harper's 65 really does the job in completing the metric mile. A couple 70s give Harper a commanding lead (~50m if not more) over Skoy with an 800 to go. However then Harper's pace slows and the lead shrinks such that with 200m to go Skoy smells blood & starts sprinting. Curiously Harper pace drops to a jog down the home stretch while he moves into lane two. A curious development if you're contending for a section title. Anyway Skoy surges pass Harper for the win.
