A "slow" lap by Koehnen makes no difference but Renfroe is caught by Clements while Dudley fades badly. A final circuit gives the Hamilton City senior a ten second win. Clements closes well to take second and a huge PR. Likewise Murillo, who second to last after the opening circuit, probably ran the most even splits to close in on Renfroe and end up fourth with a 10 second PR. A 64 lap has big consequences on those that attempted to stay close as Hastings breaks it wide open in lap 3, with Morefield, then Lervold caught by the chase group. Hasting cruises home with a new PR. Johnson and Anderson latch on to Fernandez then surge around him over the final turn, with Anderson opening up a 5m gap on Johnson hitting the home stretch. Johnson closes the gap to finish within a second of Mt Shasta senior. Fernandez hold on as best he can to take fourth. The lead expands to 40m maybe a little more in lap 4, holds steady in lap 5 but then her pace noticeably slows (a fact not lost on Koehnen). The pace slows further in lap six and more in seven and just like that Koehnen is not only back in contention, but blows by Hall with about 500m to go. Koehnen second straight triple at section which just a few minutes earlier looked very much in doubt, is a done deal as she closes well (other than being a little wobbly final 10-20 meters). Still a good race by Hall, running only her fourth 3200 on the track ever. While never in contention, Renfroe keeps to her racing plan despite the theatrics up front & comes away with a big PR. Sure Emanuel takes the point early, leaves the pace relatively modest for an 800m before ramping it down for three laps. This breaks apart the field with only Skoy and Giannini able to stay in the same area code. Skoy looks a little in trouble mid race but rallies well and then unleashes a kick (62 second closing lap) that takes him from 70-80 meters back to nearly the section title ending up within a second of Emanuel. A tough guy to beat even if is has only been healthy for a part of the season.
