Irwin on his next attempt clears 13 feet easily and pushes the pole away so it doesn't cause a problem. Meredith also clears the height. At 13' 3, Irwin successfully clears the height on his first attempt, a new personal best. Meanwhile Meredith misses twice at a height that in years pass is easy for him to clear and is in danger of losing the section title for the first time. Foothill came into the race an easy winner over Pleasant Valley in the EAL championships but lost to the Vikings in a much tighter affair at the Division I Championships. Meanwhile Weed had a much easier time and went unpressed in advancing to the section final. Tight exchanges were made all around and left Foothill & PV in a virtual tie with 100m to go. Weed was third a stride or two back. Jones opens up a very small lead early and is able to hold on to most of it. Weed freshman Collins almost steals the show by rapidly decreasing the gap with the race leaders and probably would of won if the race was 5m longer. Four teams had legitimate shots at winning this race Enterprise, Pleasant Valley, Chico and Las Plumas although it was the Hornets to lose as they came in as the section leaders although they had lost to PV twice, at the WV Invitational and EAL Championships. They pretty much ran a perfect race here and never lost control of the race. A game LP squad was in the mix at the last exchange but the final pass wasn't completed until outside the zone. Las Plumas can take some solace that hard charging of Newkirk likely kept the Enterprise's anchor completely engaged through to the line. Blake Lema starts the race like he was shot out of a rocket and had a significant gap over Carter, the section leader, coming into the home stretch. Carter certainly had a worried look on his face as he passed the press box with 50m to go. Now all Lema had to do was successfully navigate a couple more sets of hurdles and the race was his. Unfortunately it was not to be. Once again the tenth hurdle, so close to the finish line, was the bug-a-boo. He clips the hurdle, almost falls to the ground but comes to a complete stop long enough to Carter to cruise by for the win. Fatigue was certainly a factor, he was going at a pace he'd never gone before. Oh well there is next year as Lema is only a junior. Yet talk about a guy having your number, Lema was runner-up to Carter nine times in the 110 hurdles and eight times in the 300 hurdles, most of the races were close and some he had the lead or at least was even with his crosstown rival but never beat him this year. Clarke;s more robust pace finally drops Austin but McLaughlin stays close until the final circuit. when a further racheting down the pace drops his teammate.
