============================================================================================================== ============================================================================================================== Paradise, Corning early season dual Wednesday September 21, 2005 Paradise version The varsity girls, the junior varsity boys and the junior varsity girls cross-country teams defeated host Corning Wednesday afternoon. The varsity boys were defeated by Corning, which Paradise coach Dale Leick said is one of the stronger programs in the Northern Section. The junior varsity boys' race was the most dramatic of the day, as the Bobcats posted a 25-30 win. Jorell Dye finished third, covering the two miles in 12 minutes, 53 seconds. Bobcats Noah Johnson (fourth), Josh McGlothlin (fifth) and Tate Montgomery (sixth) finished in a pack, while freshman Grant Reed took seventh. "Grant ran really big for us," Leick said. "In a close meet, the fifth runner will make the difference in the win." Dianna McGlothlin won the three-mile varsity race against Corning in 22:10. Andrea Lee took third (23:16), and Emily Davis took fourth (23:31). Katelyn Hatcher finished seventh, Caitlin Cardinalli placed eighth and Diana Hunt, ninth, for the win. Bobcat Alicia Scarberry won the girls' junior varsity race in 15:07, while Andrea Rice was second. Signe Cornwell was fourth, Haley Reed was fifth, and Summer Cornwell placed sixth. She proved it Wednesday in Cottonwood when she dusted the field at a Northern Athletic League double-dual meet. With the course temperature charted at 95 degrees, on a hilly trail designed to simulate a state championship- caliber run, Johnson pulled away to finish first among the girls at 21 minutes, 13 seconds. Teammate Brittany Williams finished second in 21:41 as West Valley's girls edged Yreka 21-34. "It's dangerous out there when it's this hot," Eagles assistant coach Bill Elliott said. "Someone could die out there." Ironically enough, Johnson says the toughest leg of the course is its second incline, dubbed "Elliott's Torture" after the coach. "Whenever I run it, about halfway up I look around and think, 'Wow I'm only halfway through it,'" said Johnson smiling through her braces. Johnson says making it over "Elliott's Torture" requires as much psychological stamina as it does physical endurance. "A lot of it's based on your physical ability, but a very important part of it is your mental will," Johnson said. Does the petite, 5-foot-4 inch smiling freshman display the same grit as the middle linebackers and fullbacks she circles on the sprawling West Valley campus every Fall afternoon? "In my opinion, yeah," Johnson said with a wide grin. "Anything that goes on out on the course is your choice and that's it. You have to push yourself through it. "You feel no pain; I tell myself this when I'm running." Conquering the three-mile course in Wednesday's heat was an exercise in self torment. As was evident by the wave of Johnson's fellow runners, some of which crossed the finish line whimpering or dry-heaving. Some, male and female, finished in tears. The Eagles' Jon Hanna crossed in 17:35. He led a West Valley six-pack that finished with a perfect score of 15 against Yreka and Las Plumas. The Eagles' Matt Baker was second (17:39), followed by teammates Shane Reno (18:51), Justin Barry (19:05), Ryan Fairley (19:13) and Charles Haley (19:13). Yreka, led by Zach Schlichting's mark of 20:15, beat Las Plumas 15-49. Elliott said after Monday's cooler weather, he and Eagles head coach Scott Fairley had planned on cutting their runners loose a little to let them run for good times. But Wednesday's higher temperatures forced West Valley to pull back on the intensity. "We use these meets toward an eventual goal," coach Fairley said. "Right now, we're just kind of strategizing and working some different parts of the course harder than others." In addition to "Elliott's Torture," the trail has three major inclines dubbed "Junior Varsity Hill," -- the first -- and "Varsity Hill" the last, and longest, of the three. West Valley's course, which Fairley said was designed to mock similar conditions of the state meet in Fresno's Woodward Park, hosts the Northern Section Championships on Nov. 10 ********************************************************************************************************** Silva, Higginson race to the finish as Cards win Corning, Central Valley & Anderson meet Wednesday September 28, 2005 By PAUL GADBOIS-DN Sports Editor The Corning varsity boys cross country squad easily defeated both Anderson and Central Valley in Wednesday's three-team Northern Athletic League meet, but something unprecedented did happen at the race. Someone almost caught Cesar Silva. The Cardinals' top runner and one of the favorites to win the section title was challenged by teammate Cody Higginson down the stretch. Silva won the 3.07-mile race at Woodson Bridge Park in a time of 16 minutes, 37 seconds and Higginson was only five seconds back at 16:42. Daniel Collins of Corning came in over a minute later in third, Leonel Pulido took fifth and Tom Provine was seventh to give the Cards two easy league wins. Their score of 18 defeated Central Valley's 71 and the Cubs were incomplete with just three runners. Five are needed to field a complete squad. In the varsity girls' race, Corning also came away with a pair of victories. Since there were very few JV runners, Miriam Silva stepped up to complete the Lady Cards' varsity roster and no JV girls race was held. Silva came in fifth with a time of 25:38 behind her older teammates Rachael Higginson and Shannel Keck. Higginson won the silver title (22:39) and Keck took the bronze (24:02). Jeannette Barron and Amanda Thuemler also ran for Corning to round out the team's strong score of 23. The JV boys race was the closest of the three, as the Cards edged the Falcons 25-30. Miguel Avilla won the 2.49-mile race in 14:35, Chris Barajas was third (14:46) and teammates Lino Sanchez, K.C. Granger and Adrian Graciano placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively for the Cardinals. Silva's time was 15 minutes, 38 seconds, almost a full minute ahead of teammate Cody Higginson (16:37), who has improved so much in recent meets that he has challenged Silva for the top times. Daniel Collins took fourth for the Cardinals (17:06) and Leonel Pulido, Tom Provine, Gerardo Solorio and Sergio Zagal finished in order from 6th-9th place for Corning. All of the JV runners moved up again to consolidate a five-girl team for varsity, but the Lady Cardinals were beaten by Yreka, 18-45. Red Bluff girls top Shasta By PAUL GADBOIS-DN Sports Editor The Red Bluff varsity girls cross country team, led by Erynn Rebol and Anna Eicholtz, captured its second Eastern Athletic League victory on Wednesday, as the Lady Spartans defeated host Shasta, 26-29, in the last EAL dual of the season. Rebol beat her closest challenger by nearly a minute to win the meet in 18 minutes, 46 seconds and Eicholtz took fourth in 21:43. Also placing in the top five for Red Bluff was Kylie Irwin, who finished fifth at 22:04. Courtney Jansen and Samantha Taylor completed Red Bluff's team effort with strong performances finishing in sixth and eighth place. Varsity Boys Junior Nick Rebol took third in the varsity boys' race (16:17), beaten in a close finish by Shasta's Sean Cascarina (16:06) and David Short (16:13), who Shasta to an easy victory over Red Blufft 18-47. Corning boys knocks off West Valley at home, NAL By PAUL GADBOIS-DN Sports Editor Despite consolidating its JV and varsity into one squad, the West Valley varsity boys cross country team couldn't match the powerhouse of Corning on Wednesday afternoon, as the visiting Cardinals won the Northern Athletic League title with a 27-29 victory over the Eagles in Cottonwood. The Eagles' top runner, Matt Baker, nipped at the heels of Cesar Silva for the first mile or so, according to Corning coach Andrew Farrell, but Silva stretched his lead to a 34 second cushion by the end of the race. Silva won in an impressive 15:43 on the hilly, 3-mile West Valley course, seemingly unfazed by the tough hills in the middle miles or the deceiving incline that plagues the home stretch. Baker finished at 16:23 and teammate Jon Hanna beat out Corning's Cody Higginson for third, 16:46 to 16:53. Daniel Collins came in fifth for the Cards with Tom Provine eighth and Willy Pulido ninth to round out the scoring for Corning. Flashing its depth, Corning also had Gerardo Solorio in 10th (18:32), as well as Sergio Zagal, Oliver Patton, Jerry Ward and Jared Henry in its arsenal. The win capped an undefeated season for the Cards, who are now looking ahead to the NAL championships, the Northern Section finals and State in the coming weeks. "It's all they are talking about," coach Farrell said. "These kids are so excited, and I am just as excited as they are." Farrell plans on taking a full seven-man squad to State, and possibly others to root for the rest of the team. Varsity Girls Rachael Higginson placed second in the varsity girls' race, but the Lady Cardinals were again one runner short of a complete squad. Shannel Keck was fourth, Miriam Silva seventh and Jeannette Barron ninth. Junior Varsity Boys Chris Barajas edged teammate Miguel Avila in the JV boys race for first place and the Cardinals swept the top five spots.
