Shasta News Sophomore Ramon Rubio, left, and senior Kevin Valenzuela worked their way through the117-runner field. Rubio helped the Bears to the team win and Valenzuela made his final home appearance. With one, maybe two home appearances all season, cross country teams have few chances to make a good impression for the home crowd. The Mount Shasta cross country team took advantage of their home finale Friday afternoon, sweeping the team titles of the Mount Shasta Invitational against a talented field at Shastice Park. They ran inspired, coach Steve Nesheim said. I was a little taken aback. We tried to pull in larger teams from Redding and Chico to run against better people so We really stepped up. The girls team won their second straight meet, winning a tight battle with Chico, and the boys reclaimed their title from 2003. Senior Austin Fritzke left his mark on the Shastice Park course, lowering his own course record in what will be his final home appearance. I didn't expect to do this good, said Fritzke, who became the first runner to go under 13 minutes on the 2.4-mile course. I didn't really think about it being my last race here. Nobody really likes their home course. The defending Division V champion didn't run unchallenged. Yuba City's Brad Doering led for the first half-mile before Fritzke passed him along railroad tracks. Fritzke crossed the finish line at 12 minutes, 50 seconds, a ten second cushion over Doering coming in at 13:00. At last year's invite, Fritzke had to out-lean Doering at the tape for the win. I threw in a surge about two-thirds of a mile in so [Doering] couldn't stay with me, Fritzke said. After a mile I felt pretty good and just kept going. In the girl's race, it appeared Mount Shasta would leave empty handed after Chico had the individual winner and six runners in front of the Bears' fifth. But after the mathematicians were done, Mount Shasta had 37 points, two better than Chico. Sometimes it depends on where those five pan out, Nesheim said. We have a powerful front three, and that counts big. Chico's Hannah Dillard wrestled the course record away from Mount Shasta's Katie Fritzke, winning in 14:41 while Fritzke was third in 15:22. Freshman Cynthia Laiacona was fifth in 15:33 and sophomore Natalie Sojka was sixth in 15:38. Freshman Joanna Beem narrowed the gap between herself and the Bear's top three runners, placing 11th in 16:57. Veteran Amy Detrich closed out the scoring by placing 17th. This is encouraging because before the race we were all feeling pukey, Katie Fritzke said. And if we're feeling bad and we can still win, I know we can really do good on a good day. While the girls team race was in doubt until the final tally, there was no doubt for the boys after sophomore Ramon Rubio's mid-race surge put him in 11th place. Since transferring to Mount Shasta from Weed, Rubio has given the team a solid No. 5 runner. I passed like, eight guys, Rubio said. I felt real relaxed. I had fun. Rubio's strong finish, and Fritzke's win sandwiched a 5-6-8 finish by Matt Sojka, Cory Coppin and Kale Coppin, respectively. Sojka, still fighting a flu that has plagued the team in recent weeks, ran two seconds faster than his time that won the Siskiyou Warm-Up race on September 2nd. A record number of 172 runners crossed the finish line, and Nesheim expects the meet to expand next year, especially after Friday's favorable overcast, cool conditions. It felt like November, championship weather. Great conditions, Nesheim said. I received a lot of complements from other coaches about the quirky course length and format. We should get a lot of teams here next year. Mount Shasta will get a peek of the Small School Championship and North Section Championship course Friday at the West Valley Coed Meet in Cottonwood.
