PREP GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY EAL Championships Hannah Dillard's romp for the individual title at the Eastern Athletic League meet propelled Chico to the team championship in Redding. Despite wet conditions, Dillard controlled the 3-mile race and finished atop the 49-runner field in 18 minutes, 9 seconds for her second straight EAL title. A seventh-place finish by Michelle Johnson (19:45), 12th-place run by Leah Arreguin (20:22) and 13th-place finish from Brittany O'Regan (20:27) helped seal the victory for Chico. Pleasant Valley's Hannah Hodgkinson was second behind Dillard in 18:41. The Vikings finished fourth overall. First team all-league honors were given to the meet's top seven runners. Second-team selections went to those who finished eighth through 14th and included PV's Emily Ogden, who ended up 11th in 20:08. PREP BOYS CROSS COUNTRY EAL Championships Though Chico didn't have one runner among the race's top four, solid finishes on the 3-mile course in Redding by Thomas Walker, Henry Naas, Clay Baumgartner and Tom Whittington were enough to earn the Panthers the Eastern Athletic League championship. Walker led the charge, crossing the finish line fifth in the field of 52 runners with a time of 16 minutes, 51 seconds. Naas was seventh in 17:07, Baumgartner took ninth in 17:19 and Whittington took 13th to round out Chico's triumph. Pleasant Valley was fourth overall, with Tanner Hickman's third-place finish in 16:34 leading the way. Hickman joined Walker and Naas on the all-EAL first team, which consisted of the race's top seven runners. Baumgartner, Whittington and PV's Brian Santich, who was 11th in 17:37, were among the eighth through 14th finishers given second-team honors Malain, Dillard take EAL cross country titles By Jeffrey Jen, Record Searchlight November 3, 2006 PALO CEDRO -- As for as the results were concerned, Eric Malain's defense of his Eastern Athletic League cross country title couldn't have gone any more cleanly. The Enterprise senior's race uniform was a very different matter after splashing around a reconfigured and water-soaked 5-kilometer course at Foothill High School on Thursday. Malain still emerged as the winner of the boys race, mud splatters and all, at the EAL Cross Country Championships for a second straight year, winning in 16 minutes, 6 seconds. Red Bluff's Nick Rebol took second in 16:24, followed by Pleasant Valley's Tanner Hickman (16:34). Malain's freshman teammate Zach Kaylor was fourth in 16:42. In the girls race, the last two Northern Section champions finished 1-2. Chico's Hannah Dillard, last year's section champ, cruised to victory in 18:09 followed by the 2004 section champ Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson in 18:41. Erynn Rebol, a Red Bluff sophomore, took third (19:00) while Enterprise's Amanda Barber was fourth(19:19). Shasta teammates Leigh-Ann Krantz and Kori Simpson placed fifth and sixth in 19:27 and 19:28. Chico ended up sweeping both the boys and girls team titles. The Panthers' boys team had 40 points, while Shasta was second with 50. The Wolves were without Kevin Saunders, their No. 4 runner, who was out with an illness. Chico, however, placed five runners in the top 14. The Hornets' girls team placed second with 57 points, behind the Panthers' 51. Shasta was third with 61 points. As for the individual performances, both Malain and Dillard took much of the suspense out of the race, at least in terms of who would win, early on. All the runners had to deal with a downhill start for the first 100 yards after the usual starting spot on the Foothill course got too drenched thanks to the Thursday afternoon rain. That didn't stop either eventual winner from starting out front and staying there. "It changed things at the beginning," Malain said. "I was waiting for about 10 or 12 guys to pull up with injured hamstrings or something. I just planned on being steady and under control at the start." By the time he came out of the woods and started racing over the soccer field at the tail end of the first mile, Malain had a slight cushion over a line of would-be challengers. The following pack eventually thinned out with Rebol and Kaylor leading and Hickman right behind, but Malain remained out in front, steadily building his lead all the way to the finish. With his second league title in the bag, the only hole left in Malain's prep resume is a section title. He looms as the biggest challenger to favorite Brent Handa of Fall River when the Northern Section finals runs at West Valley High School on Thursday. The only competition Dillard may have there is with the clock. Despite the muddy, soaked course, Dillard came in a fast after jumping out to an early lead. Hodgkinson eventually separated herself from the field as well and left Rebol and Barber to battle it out for the next spot. Shortly after the 2-mile mark, Rebol finally went ahead. "I'm not in the same class with Hodgkinson, so I was running with Amanda," Rebol said. "I didn't think about catching the others. I just was trying to keep my rhythm and run as fast as I could at the same time." The top seven finishers in each race were named all-league, with the next seven getting second-team honors. Joining Malain, Rebol, Hickman and Kaylor on the boys first team was Shasta's Andrew Pebley and Chico's Thomas Walker and Henry Naas. The Wolves' Zeke Bates led off the second team, joined by teammates Alan Braithwaite and Matt Lander. Red Bluff's Stephen Ferguson's 10th-place finish also netted him a spot. Chico's Michelle Johnson placed seventh to round out the first team, while Enterprise's Stephanie Frescas led the second team. Foothill teammates Julia Walker and Lauren Teesdale placed ninth and 10th. Shasta's Shelby Randall was 14th to also earn a spot after battling injuries all season.
