Wednesday September 13, 2006 Fall River Invitational -- The Bulldogs' Brent Handa took a convincing win in the boys race, finishing nearly two minutes ahead of second-place finisher Bryan Maelfoyt. Handa completed the 3.3-mile course in 17 minutes, 59 seconds, while Trinity's Maelfoyt crossed the line in 19:41. Modoc junior Cain Madrigal was third in 23:02, and Burney senior Cooper Allison was fourth in 24:59. Trinity placed runners in the fifth-through 10th spots, starting with junior, Levi Cook in 26:48, junior, David Johnson in 28:22, junior Jake Hopko in 29:46, junior Malcolm Hemm in 31:38 and senior Io Thongsandhi in 31:41. Modoc's Michel Funk won the 3.3-mile girls race in 25 minutes, 48 seconds, followed by teammate Danielle Moriarty who crossed the line five seconds later. In the eighth-grade race, Redding Adventist's Eric Ghelfi set a course record on the 1.1-mile track in 5:53. Varsity Boys Corning 28, West Valley 28 Corning 16, Anderson 32 The top five runners of West Valley and Corning tied, so it came down to the sixth man of both squads and with Mario Bobadilla taking 11th overall, the Cardinals earned the victory. Willy Pulido beat teammate Tom Provine by less than a second at 16 minutes, 59 seconds, and the pair placed second and third, respectively, behind Ryan Fairley of West Valley (16:45). Miguel Avila finished sixth, Chris Barajas was ninth and Kevin Anthony was 10th for the Cardinals. "All the guys had someone either right ahead of them or right behind them," Corning coach Andrew Farrell said. "You could see it on their faces, they were pushing themselves harder than they thought they could go. It was a very exciting race." Varsity Girls West Valley 19, Corning 45 Corning 15, Anderson inc. West Valley placed four in the top five to dominate the varsity girls race, but Corning still earned a win because the Lady Cubs were incomplete.
