D'Acquisto, Walker run to titles

PALO CEDRO -- One is a junior at a school once known for standout cross country runners, the other is a freshman on
his way to possibly being finest runner yet at a program now considered one of the best in the area. What Foothill
High School's Julia Walker and Enterprise's Domenic D'Acquisto have in common now is both are Eastern Athletic League
cross country champions.

Running on her home course Thursday, Walker held off the field in the girls 5-kilometer race to win in 19 minutes,
35 seconds. Less than an hour later, D'Acquisto added to his impressive freshman campaign crossing the finish line
first in the boys race in 15:55. The No. 2 runner in the Northern Section, D'Acquisto seized the lead early and never
was seriously challenged.

Pleasant Valley senior Tanner Hickman was second in 16:20, while Hornets sophomore Zach Kaylor was third (16:36).

"I tried to go out 110 percent," D'Acquisto said, "Do my part for the team. At Enterprise, we try to run our first
mile and see if we can and maintain it and not lose our spot to anybody behind us." The way he looked, D'Acquisto
may have more left in the tank. Though he was well ahead of the field approaching the finish line, the freshman
still put in a nice finishing kick to make sure he went under the 16-minute barrier. Likely, he will be one of the
favorites, along with West Valley's Trevor Siperek, at Thursday's Northern Sectioncross country championships at
West Valley High School.

Behind Hickman and fourth-place finisher Dustin Gibbs (16:56), Pleasant Valley scored 44 points to edge Chico (46)
for the league title. Enterprise took third (67), followed by Red Bluff (127) and Foothill (130). The top seven
runners earn all-league honors with the Spartans' Mat Collins (17:07) winding up seventh to join D'Acquisto, Hickman,
Kaylor, Gibbs and Chico's duo of Phil Graber (17:01) and Henry Naas (17:06) on the list.

Going into the girls race, Chico's Michelle Johnson was expected to be the favorite. However, it was Panthers
teammate Paige Henker who led the field after the first mile. However, when the leading runners entered the woods,
some, such as Henker, Johnson, Walker and Red Bluff's Erynn Rebol, took a wrong turn before getting called back onto
the course. "We've all run on this course before," Rebol said. "It's just that sometimes you get so focused on the
race, you tend to follow the pack. It wasn't anything serious, maybe like 10 feet or so. It probably only added a
few seconds on our time."

Johnson still got back into the front, but was passed by Walker going uphill. Turns out yet another Chico runner
Leah Arreguin would prove to be the stiffest challenge. Walker's lead was only a few meters heading into the woods
the final time, but she pulled away to win comfortably in front of the runner-up Arreguin (19:48). "It wasn't until
I passed Michelle on the hill that I realized I had a chance," Walker said. "I was originally running for time.
"Definitely, this gives me a lot of confidence for the section meet."

Rebol took third (20:12) while Johnson was fourth (20:21) as Chico scored 32 points to easily win the girls team
title. Enterprise freshman Delanne Bartlett was fifth (20:26) to lead the Hornets into a second-place finish with
47 points. Foothill was third (67), followed by Pleasant Valley (107) and Red Bluff (112).

Oroville's Sarah Brandt was sixth (20:27.27) followed by Chico's Jocelyn Courtney (20:27.89) and Henker (20:40).
Enterprise's Jerri Spence (20:41) and Melissa McRae (20:56) were ninth and 10th, respectively.

PREP BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

PV wins EAL final

The Chico High and Pleasant Valley boys cross country teams are having a heck of a time trying top each other this
season. The Vikings, who fell to the Panthers in the regular season meeting between the two teams, garnered enough
wins en route to first place at Thursday's Eastern Athletic League finals meet in Palo Cedro to earn a share of the
title. Chico needed to finish in second place to remain even and did just that.

Tanner Hickman bolstered PV's cause by taking second in the individual standings with a time of 16 minutes, 20.11
seconds after being beaten by winner Domenic D'Acquisto of Enterprise, who finished in 15:55.85. PV's Dustin Gibbs
(16:56.68) was fourth while Chico's Phil Graber (17:01.42) was fifth ahead of teammate Henry Naas (17:06.42) in
sixth. The top seven finishers earned all-league honors.

Honorable mentions, which account for those who placed seventh through 14th, included Chico's Daniel Parker and
Tom Walker, Paradise's Grant Reed and PV's Chad Millard and Jordan Schwarz.

PREP GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Chico rolls for title

The Panthers rounded out a strong season with the win at the Eastern Athletic League finals in Palo Cedro by
placing three runners among the top seven — the criteria for all-league selections. Leah Arreguin led the way with
a second-place run of 19 minutes, 48.16 seconds. Teammate Michelle Johnson was fourth in 20:21.65 and Jocelyn
Courtney ended up seventh for Chico in 20:27.89. Foothill's Julia Walker won the individual title in 19:35.08 to
help the Cougars take third overall behind second-place Enterprise.

Chico's Paige Henker and Analy Nava joined Pleasant Valley's Emily Ogden, who propelled the Vikings to fourth
place in the standings, on the honorable mention list of seventh through 14th finishers.
