Out in front: Shasta boys, West Valley girls claim SRL cross country championships Shasta's Woollard, West Valley's Storms win individual titles

By T.J. Holmes/Record Searchlight Posted November 1, 2012 PALO CEDRO — The Shasta boys and West Valley girls cross country teams left no doubt as to which team belongs at the top. Shasta had five of the top six runners, and West Valley's five finished in the top seven to cruise in the inaugural Sacramento River League championships on Thursday at Foothill High School. Shasta's Landon Woollard turned in the best boys time, winning in 16 minutes, 7 seconds, leading the Wolves to the SRL title with a scant 18 points. Woollard used a strong start to separate from the field and coasted the rest of the way, finishing 25 seconds ahead of teammate Blake Zufall. "I had a fast first mile," Woollard said. "That last mile was tough, but you have to just focus at that point." West Valley's Ryan Stockton (16:38), who ruined the Wolves' perfect score by coming in third, was followed by a trio Shasta runners. Hunter Jensen (4th-16:45), Josh Bland (5th-17:05) and Riley Davis (6th-17:06) to complete the Wolves scoring. Although Nathan Schillens' seventh-place finish (17:07) didn't add to the Wolves' official point total, he did manage to grab the final all-league spot, giving Shasta six of the seven all-SRL members. It's not a surprise, considering Shasta is the top-ranked boys team in the Northern Section. "I'm proud of our team. It was a great showing, and we all can't wait for sections next week," Woollard said. West Valley's boys team finished second with 51 points and Red Bluff was third with 68 points. Foothill had an incomplete team while the league's fifth member Enterprise failed to field any runners at all. Boys all-league honorable mentions, ranked in order of finish, included West Valley's Jeff Foreman (17:12), Shasta's Wesley Jackman (17:20), Foothill's Austin Hunt (17:42), Red Bluff's Jordan McManus (17:53), West Valley's Nick McCaslin (18:23), Red Bluff's Aza Bravo (18:29) and West Valley's Austin Smith (18:36). Meanwhile, the West Valley girls team had near the same success as the Shasta boys, finishing strong with sophomore Jenna Storms leading the way in 19:07 and five of the top seven. Storms was able to push through the largest hill and pull away from Enterprise's Sydney Pruett, who took first in the opening SRL meet on Oct. 3 on West Valley's home course. "I was just trying to go steady, keep a steady pace and keep kicking away," Storms said. Storms has helped stabilize the Eagles, while senior Hannah Dorman has been out with a leg and ankle injury for more than a month, West Valley coach Scott Fairley said. "Jenna has run better than she did before Hannah went down, and other girls like Megan James and Delaney Faggard and others have stepped up," Fairley said. James (19:43) and Faggard (19:46) surged by a fading Pruett to finish second and third overall, respectively. Enterprise's second runner Shalynn Fullerton (20:14) followed Pruett (19:52) to the finish line. But West Valley's depth was the main reason it was able to capture the league championship. Alexa Flagg (20:47) came in sixth, followed by Rayleen Matheson (21:02), who sneaked into the seventh spot and earning all-league — the pleasant surprise of the day, Fairley said. The Eagles ended up with 19 points, compared to Enterprise's 52, Shasta's 70 and Red Bluff's 82. Enterprise and Foothill had incomplete teams. The girls all-league honorable mentions, ranked in order of finish, were Foothill's Kelsey DiFillipo (21:06), Red Bluff's Nicole Renfroe (21:12), Shasta's Nathalie Avalos (21:15), Shasta's Madison Browning (21:18), Red Bluff's Natalie Renfroe (21:35), Enterprise's Tammey Kramm (21:42) and Shasta's Michaela Dyson (21:52). The section championships are at West Valley High School on Thursday in Cottonwood. The varsity girls start at 2 p.m., and the varsity boys are scheduled to start at 2:40 p.m. ============================================================================================================================= Sacramento River League Championships Thursday, November 1, 2012 Foothill High School Palo Cedro, California Boys Results 5,000 Meters Varsity Team Scores ================================== 1 Shasta 18 2 West Valley 51 3 Red Bluff 68 - Foothill inc - Enterprise dnc Individual Results ================================================================= 1 Landon Woollard 11 Shasta 16:07 2 Blake Zufall 12 Shasta 16:32 3 Ryan Stockton 12 West Valley 16:38 4 Hunter Jensen 12 Shasta 16:45 5 Josh Bland 11 Shasta 17:05 6 Riley Davis 10 Shasta 17:06 7 Nathan Schillen 11 Shasta 17:07 8 Jeff Foreman 11 West Valley 17:12 9 Wesley Jackman 12 Shasta 17:20 10 Austin Hunt 11 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 17:42 11 Jordan McManus 12 Red Bluff 17:53 12 Nick McCaslin 11 West Valley 18:23 13 Aza Bravo 11 Red Bluff 18:29 14 Austin Smith 12 West Valley 18:36 15 Erich Bucher 11 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 18:39 16 Adam Zufall 12 Shasta 19:04 17 Grey Grotke 11 Red Bluff 19:59 18 Ian Borchard 11 Red Bluff 20:23 19 John Weiler 12 West Valley 21:08 20 Stephen Hackstaff 12 Red Bluff 22:58 21 Alex Kaiser 11 Red Bluff 23:52 22 Cain Keenen 11 Red Bluff 25:01 1.9 Mile Junior Varsity Team Scores ================================== 1 West Valley 38 2 Enterprise 48 2 Shasta 59 4 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 64 - Red Bluff inc Individual Results ================================================================= 1 Gabe Cheek 9 West Valley 10:11 2 Brent Hunter 9 West Valley 10:25 3 Donald Leedy 9 West Valley 10:26 4 Spencer Bade 9 Shasta 10:30 5 Seth Garrison 10 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 10:35 6 Ryan Corless 10 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 10:37 7 Marco Weyerman 10 Enterprise 10:43 8 Chris Prielipp 10 Enterprise 10:47 9 Nikhil Davuluri 10 Shasta 11:01 10 Jon Fisher 10 Enterprise 11:05 11 Ryan Bade 9 Shasta 11:06 12 Zach Baldwin 9 West Valley 11:12 13 Jake Hiener 10 Enterprise 11:19 14 Jonathan Schneringer 12 Shasta 11:23 15 Dalen Jones 10 Enterprise 11:31 16 Hunter Norris 10 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 11:40 17 Andrew Thomsen 9 West Valley 11:41 18 Colton Boontjer 9 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 11:47 19 Sherman Taylor 11 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 11:53 20 Tim Roberts 9 West Valley 11:59 21 Jesse Anberg 10 Shasta 12:01 22 Conner Schmidt 12 Shasta 12:01 23 Jacob Glass 11 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 12:02 24 Nicholes Love 9 Shasta 12:19 25 Jonathan Knecht 9 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 12:22 26 Logan McClain 10 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 12:22 27 Jacob Scheuerman 12 Shasta 12:34 28 Cole Fugitt 9 Shasta 13:15 29 Ross Lockwood 9 Shasta 13:23 30 William Parker 9 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 13:40 31 Josiah Vasey 10 Red Bluff 13:54 Girls Results 5,000 Meters Varsity Team Scores ================================== 1 West Valley 19 2 Enterprise 52 3 Shasta 70 4 Red Bluff 82 - Foothill inc Individual Results ================================================================= 1 Jenna Storms 10 West Valley 19:07 2 Megan James 10 West Valley 19:43 3 Delaney Faggard 11 West Valley 19:46 4 Sydney Pruett 10 Enterprise 19:52 5 Shalynn Fullerton 10 Enterprise 20:14 6 Alexa Flagg 10 West Valley 20:47 7 Rayleen Matheson 10 West Valley 21:02 8 Kelsey DiFillipo 12 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 21:06 9 Nicole Renfroe 9 Red Bluff 21:12 10 Nathalie Avalos 12 Shasta 21:15 11 Madison Browning 11 Shasta 21:18 12 Natalie Renfroe 10 Red Bluff 21:35 13 Tammey Kramm 12 Enterprise 21:42 14 Michaela Dyson 10 Shasta 21:52 15 Lisa Jostock 12 Enterprise 21:56 16 Teagan Perry 11 West Valley 22:09 17 Jesica Rodriquez 11 West Valley 22:11 18 Zoe Humprey 9 Enterprise 22:25 19 Amanda Jensen 10 Shasta 22:30 20 Brooke Bostrom 11 West Valley 23:12 21 Claire Lester 10 Red Bluff 23:37 22 Sarah Hill 12 Shasta 23:51 23 Adrienne Hinkston 11 Red Bluff 24:00 24 Amber Jensen 9 Shasta 25:03 25 Lauren McFarlen 12 Red Bluff 27:31 26 Katelyn Burch 12 Red Bluff 27:33 1.9 Mile Junior Varsity Team Scores ================================== 1 Enterprise 28 - West Valley inc - Foothill inc - Red Bluff inc - Shasta inc Individual Results ================================================================= 1 Chelsea Morrow 10 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 12:48 2 Haley McPeek 9 West Valley 13:14 3 Patti Dionicio 11 Enterprise 13:33 4 Tessa Jepsen 10 Enterprise 13:54 5 Shanti Herzog 9 Enterprise 13:57 6 Taylor Gardner 10 Enterprise 14:14 7 Sarah Stauffer 11 Enterprise 14:16 8 Alex Nason 10 Enterprise 14:25 9 Maggie Greco 9 Foothill (Palo Cedro) 14:36 10 Tessa Balkow 10 Enterprise 14:44 11 Kloie Hiemstra 9 Red Bluff 14:51 12 Kristiana Zufall 10 Shasta 14:53 13 Alyssa Brooks 9 Enterprise 15:34 14 Tessa Burch 9 Red Bluff 17:01 15 Miky Davis 9 Enterprise 18:30
