On Track for Great Season
MILNE & KSENZULAK LEAD
(9/20/09-Cottonwood-Jeffrey Jen) If Saturday can be considered a preview for the Northern California championships,
then the Knights may be in good shape. Stephanie Ksenzulak won the women's three-mile race as the Shasta College
women's cross country team finished third overall at the Shasta Invitational meet at West Valley High School. The
Shasta men finished eighth, highlighted by a fifth-place result from sophomore Andrew Milne. The meet drew 10 teams
in the women's race and 11 for the men. That's because the NorCal Championships will also be held at West Valley
on Nov. 8 and many of the teams came up to get their runners a chance to get a feel for the course beforehand.
In the women's race, run on the same course as the Northern Section prep cross country championships, Ksenzulak
grabbed the early lead and never gave it up. The 27-year-old sophomore crossed the finish line in 18:59 seconds,
far in front of Modesto sophomore Ana Mendez (19:38). "I liked it," Ksenzulak said of the course. "I never ran out
here before and I was coming off a high-mileage week of running, so I was surprised how fresh my legs were." Ksenzulak
said she normally likes to go out fast and get some distance on her nearest competitors. Sometimes, it works. Other
times, it backfires. On Saturday, she had the legs to make it work. Mendez and freshman Sable Browning (19:55) gave
Modesto a 2-3 finish, helping to lead the Pirates to an easy win in the team competition. Modesto compiled 51 points,
while San Mateo had 97 and Shasta 104. Sacramento was fourth (122) and American River took fifth (125). Knights cross
country coach Aaron Junta was pleased with his team's results considering that he had a couple of runners on the way
back from illnesses and injuries. Shasta freshman Brittany Williams was 11th in 21:12 and Stephanie Frescas, another
freshman, was 18th in 22:04. "There was really only one strong women's team that wasn't here today and that's Sequoias,"
Junta said. "So likely we would probably move to fourth in the rankings (up from seventh). We still have some girls
who can run better, so there's a good chance we can catch San Mateo." Junta said the team goal was to finish third
at NorCals this year.
Hartnell freshman Daniel Tapia won the four-mile men's race in 21:26. Modesto's Nuno Espadinha was second in 22:07,
followed by Hartnell's Hector Aleman (22:30), DeAnza's Abiy Gebrekristos (22:40.32) and Milne (22:40.91). Milne was
as far back as 15th at the midway point, but the Redding Adventist product has run on the course before in the prep
ranks. He used his knowledge to make a late charge into the top five. "I was pretty conservative today," Milne said.
"I didn't want to burn myself out since it is still early in the cross country season."
American River edged out Hartnell 61 to 62 for the team title despite choosing to do the equivalent of a workout
and run as a group instead of going hard. Modesto was third with 72 points. Shasta had 185 to finish eighth as Milne
was the lone Knights runner in the top 30. The next best result belonged to freshman Shaieff Mulkey in 34th in 24:08.
Again, Junta noted most of the top 10 teams came to the meet and it takes a top 10 result in Northern California to
qualify for the state meet as a team. That is the ultimate goal for the Shasta men. If Saturday is a preview, then
both teams' goals are very much still within reach.
