EUREKA >> At Saturday’s ‘Beat the Heat’ cross-country meet at the College of the Redwoods, nobody could beat Joseph Esparza.

The Corsairs runner won the first race of the season with a time of 22:32, beating Butte College’s Justin Garcia by 12 seconds. Santa Rosa’s Jeffrey
Martin finished in third place with a time of 23:08.

“He won the meet with a good time on a hard course,” Corsairs head coach Reed Elmore said of Esparza’s performance.

While Esparza led the field, no other CR runner was able to crack the top 10. Zephir Lennox finished with a time of 24:52 (19th place), just
one second behind Butte’s Martin Hernandez. Joshua Gorman (25:29) and John Milender (25:37) finished in 23rd and 24th place, respectively. Marcus
Bullard finished in 32nd place with a time of 36:33.

Butte won the men’s race with a low-score of 32 points. Santa Rosa was second with 44 points. Shasta with 75 points and CR with 83 points finished
in third and fourth, respectively.

In the women’s race, Corsairs runners Amanda Viera and Alie Newhouse both cracked the top 10 at their first meet of the season. Viera finished
fourth overall with a time of 22:51, nine seconds off the pace of third-place finisher, Anna Drake-Trip of Santa Rosa. Newhouse posted a time of
25:12 to finish in eighth place. Corsair Tasewi Williams finished in 13th place with a time of 27:06. Matty Bills crossed the finish line in 15th
place with a time of 29:59 for CR.

“The women ran well and are just starting training,” Reed said. “Amanda (Viera) and Alie (Newhouse) set themselves up to be in the hunt for
all-conference honors.”

Butte’s Talia Swangler won the race with a time of 21:04, more than a minute ahead of Santa Rosa’s Angie Law, who posted a time of 22:09.

Shasta won the women’s team event with a total of 52 points. They were the only team to have five runners post a time.

While Reed was pleased with some of his team’s performances, he acknowledged the road ahead is a long one.

“I am looking forward to improvements across the board,” he said. “As a team, we have a lot of work to do but we should be there at the end.
The goal, as always, is to get to state.”

The Corsairs next meet is Friday, Sept. 2 at the NorCal Preview in Sacramento.
