Sam Glusman won three individual events and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team to keep the Panthers undefeated season alive, beating Pleasant Valley 93-30 on Wednesday afternoon.
Likewise, Kiara Reed paced the Chico girls to the 78-49 win over the Vikings at the Pleasant Valley track.
The Panther boys (5-0) are arguably the team to beat heading into the EAL finals at Enterprise | | | | | Chico's Kiara Reed finishes off her victory in the 400 meters during the Panthers' dual meet win over Pleasant Valley on Wednesday. In the 400 relay, Chico and Pleasant Valley were tight heading into the final leg, but a shaky final exchange for the Vikings — as well as a clean one for the Panthers — gave the visiting team the win in 44.43 seconds.
"The exchange is something that can make or break your race," said Glusman, whose 110 high hurdles time of 14.87 was the top time in the Northern Section last year. "You can have all the speed, but if you don't nail the handoff, it doesn't mean | | | | | Pleasant Valley High's Laura Talley clears the bar in the high jump during the Vikings' dual meet against Chico on Wednesday afternoon at Pleasant Valley High.Jason Halley/Enterprise-Record | | | much. It has to be a continuous race."
Glusman also won the 110 hurdles in 14.39, the 100 in 11.13 and the 300 hurdles in 42.6.
Chico's Seth Mares took the 400 in 51.9, and Max Zavala won the 200 in 23.0.
After dropping the 400 relay, the Vikings (1-2) came right back to sweep the 1,600, led by Tanner Hickman's 4:42.94. But even with the few events PV won, the Panthers' depth minimized the damage.
PV coach Chris Gulbrandsen felt his team competed extremely well, but against a power like the Panhers and a thin squad, the Vikings had their work cut out.
"Chico should be the odds-on favorite and they performed like it," Gulbrandsen said. "They have top-notch athletes, great coaching and they have a lot of class. That's a combination that's hard to beat."
On the girls' side, Reed stole the show for Chico (5-0) with individual wins in the 400 meters (57.55) and the 200 (26.5), while anchoring both winning relays.
"Kiara ran that all by herself, too," Chico girls coach Dale Edson said. "She's tough to beat."
Chico went 1-2-3 in the 100 hurdles, led by Michaela Campos in 16.16, and Heather Egan won the 100 in 13.4, also a Panther sweep.
Michelle Parsons was a double-winner for the Vikings (2-1). She took the discus with a throw of 102 feet, 10 inches, and won the shot put with a heave of 35-8.
Chico's Sarah Alonzo won the triple jump (30-9 1/2), then beat PV's Paige Burington in the high jump with fewer misses and a leap of 5-1, completing her third consecutive undefeated season in EAL dual meets in the high jump.
Alonzo, a senior, is also the two-time defending EAL, Division I and section champion.
Burington won the long jump with a bound of 16-2, while 1,600 winner Hannah Hodgkinson finished in 5:22.1 for the Vikings. |
