REDDING - Crosstown rivals were locked in a tight battle for EAL north girls track supremacy at Enterprise High School. Pleasant Valley dominated the sprints and jumps with Gabrielle Finlay-Vacquero taking the 100, 200 while Brooke Whitburn easily defended her titles in the long and triple jumps. The two combined with Michelle Guilbault (third 200, 4th 100) and Natalie Makel (4th 200) to win the 400 meter relay in a tight race over a talented Foothill crew. However it was Chico's domination of the hurdles and the longer running events that was highlighted by Kody Atkins unprecended quadruple, not only running but coming home with victories in the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200. Ultimately Chico's three scorers in the 3200, four placers in the 800 and winning the 1600 relay (without Atkins) proved too difficult for the Vikings to overcome.
With a lot of holes in their lineup, the Chico, PV boys were also rans in the varsity boys competition at the
EAL North Championships where Enterprise pulled away from a tough Foothill squad to reclaim the league
title for another year. The Panthers had no winners on the day although Nimai Buroz, Dallas Thorpe finished 2-3 in the 800, Buroz and Chris Midkiff took 3-4
in the 1600 and sophomore Andris Molina took third in the 3200. Chico came away with no points in the sprints or
short hurdles although they did place 2-3 in the long hurdles on the legs of Josef Grundy, Eoin Mackall.
The future looks bright as both placers in the 300H are juniors and sophomore Michael Reynolds won both JV hurdle
races in dominant fashion.
The Viking's section leader in the 400 Brad Cox, eeked out a victory over his sophomore teammate, followed that up by finising a strong second in
the 200 and running the anchor in the winning 1600 relay team. Daniel Celis followed up his runnerup finish in the 400, by placing 3rd in the 200
and also taking a leg on the 1600 relay. PV's Sam Castillo took second in the discus. The boys title was claimed by Enterprise,
who used superior depth in the hurdles and field events to power away from crosstown rival Foothill who dominated
the sprints and used the league's best distance runner Tony Meredith strong performances in the distance events.
