REDDING - The Northern Section Division I Track and Field Championships were essentially a rematch of the league championship held a week ago at Paradise High as the seven Eastern Athletic League teams this time vied for Big School (or Division I) Championships. For Chico, Enterprise, Foothill, Paradise, Pleasant Valley, Red Bluff and Shasta only the venue changed with Moynahan Field at Enterprise Community Stadium now the site of the competition. That didn't lessen the victories on Friday. In fact there was much more on the line as only the top two individuals in each event were guaranteed of advancing to the section championships, set for next Friday at West Valley High in Cottonwood. Other entries would be determined by the top marks from the various division finals held elsewhere on Friday.

The girls overall team title went to host Enterprise after the Hornets finished second to Chico in the final event of the late evening, the 1,600-meter relay. The Hornets needed to lose Shasta by no more than a place. However they managed to do much better than that by riding a season best performance to end up second in 4 minutes, 12.60 seconds, or two places better than Shasta. Enterprise tallied 126 points, Shasta finished with 119 with Chico third with 102. PV ended up fourth at 54. Foothill was fifth at 45, and Paradise took sixth at 24. Red Bluff totaled 16. The meet could have been even tighter if Foothill's Belle Moran , the topped ranked 1600m runner in the section, hadn't come down with a virus (& 102F temperature) earlier in the week.

Once the totals were announced, the Hornets yelled in excitement after the narrow victory was made official. "It just makes me really proud to be a part of Enterprise and this team. I'm just so proud," said Enterprise sophomore Natalie Ulloa, who won the 3,200 in 11:26.10. Ulloa's title in the 3,200 combined with teammate Shalynn Fullerton fourth place finish in the event put Enterprise ahead of their cross town rival by a scant three points, with only the long relay to go, staging the moment quite well for the final event on the day. She made her move after the first of eight laps in the race. "I wasn't going to run with the crowd," Ulloa said. "I could have gone easy. But I was like, 'Nahhh . I want to go hard and just run my race.'"

Courtney Kerman and Kevon Cunningham were double winners for Pleasant Valley, as the Vikings dominated the sprint races. Chico's Sharlotte Sheffield couldn't match her performance the week before but still anchored the Panther's winning 400m relay while finishing in the runner up spot in the 200, 400 and 300 hurdles. The Chico girls also won the long relay, this time without the help of Sheffield.

The Foothill boys won the overall team title with 104 points, with Shasta in second at 97.5 and Enterprise in third with 97. Pleasant Valley was fourth at 95, with Chico a distant fifth at 52. Paradise ended up sixth at 25, while Red Bluff finished seventh with 21.5. The Cougars didn't have a boy win multiple events, it was Foothill's depth that powered the team to the crown. In contrast, Chico had no depth but did have Jacob Graber, who after winning the 800 and 1600, anchored the Panthers to a dramatic victory in the long relay by pulling by Paradise in the closing meters of the race.

Seth Garrison won the 400 in 51.84, and Jeremiah Putnam took the high jump at 6 feet, 1 inch, were the Cougars only winner although they did get a 18 point boost from the pole vault by placing 2-3-4. "It was a good time. It was a hard race," said Garrison, a senior who competed in several events and liked how the Cougars are closing the season in his last with the team. "I'm excited. Hopefully, I'll make it to state."
